Terråk combines a boatbuilding tradition with several hiking trails and excursion destinations. You can therefore focus your trip planning in different ways: on cultural history, trails near the center, or a route through wooded and partly marshy terrain. The topics you want to focus on during your stay can guide your choice of places to visit.

Boatbuilding tradition in Terråk

The Nordland boat and boatbuilding tradition are at the heart of the Bindal Båtsenter in Terråk. This living museum shares knowledge and history about these topics; visitors can also experience the craft of boatbuilding there. This craft shaped coastal culture for centuries. Here, the history of the Nordland boat meets the practical craft of boatbuilding. Check the current visitor arrangements before your visit, as local arrangements may change.

Hiking trails and excursion destinations

Stillelva is an established hiking trail near the center, with rest areas and information boards. Trollskogen has a shelter and an activity area. The shelter at lower Veabakken is easy to reach from the residential areas. Uses also vary: Omformeren is a hiking trail near the center that is used for training; Nessahaugen is an excursion area near the center that is used, among other things, by the school.

The route through Veabakken, Hellefossmyra, and Kraftverksveien in Terråkmarka crosses flat, marshy areas and follows a gravel road through wooded terrain. Parking is available for this route along the main road. The marked trail to Svartåstjønna is suitable as an excursion destination for children and is also a starting point for going farther into Terråkfjellet. Terrain and trail conditions can change with the seasons; parking conditions can also change. Check them before setting out.

Bindal as a regional cultural context

In the Bindal destination, the Bindal Museum in Terråk shares knowledge about the local use of wood, forestry, the timber industry, and boatbuilding. It also focuses on the boreal rainforest and its diverse lichen flora, which includes several endangered species. Bindal bygdetun is located on the former Solheim tenant farm, dating from 1875. The buildings are closed, but open on request and at announced times during the summer season. Check visitor arrangements in advance. At the Bindal Museum, visitors are guided through the exhibition.

Vassås Church is also part of Bindal’s cultural context: a church has stood there since the Middle Ages; the present building was erected in 1733. It is an octagonal cruciform church, a type of architecture particularly common in central Norway.
