Verrabotn: Fjord Landscape and Cultural History
Accommodation in Verrabotn
Verrabotn combines its location at the inner end of Verrasundet with cultural and historical traces on the Refsnes peninsula. The fjord arm and Route 720 offer different points of reference; historical sites and buildings add further topics to explore during your stay.
Location on Verrasundet
Verrabotn lies at the inner end of Verrasundet. The fjord arm is about 22 kilometers long and extends all the way to Verrabotn. This length refers to the fjord arm as a whole, while the location at its inner end describes the village’s position in relation to the sound. Verrabotn is also on County Road 720. You can therefore orient yourself to the village using both the fjord and a specific road reference.
Cultural history on Refsnes
Refsnes is a diverse cultural environment on the Refsnes peninsula, with a history stretching back a long time. The oldest traces there are Stone Age settlements several thousand years old. There are also traces of historic salmon weirs. Another point of reference is the memorial stone on Refsnes: the 2.6-ton stone was erected in 1914 in memory of men from Stjørna who took part in the Napoleonic Wars. The subjects thus range from early traces of settlement to a clearly dated memorial; the traces of the salmon weirs add another example of historical use.
Fines Church in Verrabotn also offers a specific architectural point of interest. It is a wooden long church with 136 seats, designed by master builder Ole Havnæs. Its form, material, design, and seating capacity provide different details about the church. Geology is another facet of the village’s profile: Verrabotn is designated a geological type locality.
Distinctive attractions in Steinkjer
In Steinkjer, Egge Museum is located on Eggevammen, in a landscape shaped by cultural heritage sites and traces of the entire history of humankind. Near Egge, an Iron Age burial ground extends for 1.3 kilometers and includes 33 burial monuments. At the open-air museum, a maid or farmhand tells visitors about the buildings and life on a Trønder farm toward the end of the 19th century. The tractor exhibition features agricultural machinery, particularly tractors, from several historical periods of development. The archaeological landscape, rural life, and technological development offer different ways to explore Steinkjer’s history.
The churches in Steinkjer and Mære also offer distinctive architectural and historical features. Steinkjer Church has a 38-meter-high, freestanding square tower. A five-meter-high altarpiece by Jakob Weidemann is on its rear wall. Mære Church is an early medieval Romanesque gray-stone church built on a pre-Christian place of worship. Its surviving historical furnishings include a 13th-century crucifix, several 15th-century chairs, and an altarpiece and pulpit from the mid-17th century.
