Trones in Trøndelag brings together several different attractions for a stay: Park Nordica, the circular trail on Tunnsjøåsen, a cycling route and the station on the Nordland Line. When looking for a hotel in Trones, you can consider whether wildlife, hiking, cycling or travelling by train is especially important for your trip.

Nature and wildlife

Park Nordica is a year-round nature and adventure park in Trones, focused on Nordic wildlife and wilderness. In the wider destination of Namsskogan, visitors can see wolves, moose, bears, reindeer, lynx and otters there. If animals and wilderness are at the heart of your travel plans, the park offers a different focus from a hike or cycling tour.

Hiking on Tunnsjøåsen

The circular trail on Tunnsjøåsen is 4 km long and has about 200 metres of elevation gain. It follows a well-marked trail signposted to national standards and is suitable for the whole family. The trail starts at Trones School, a few minutes’ walk from Namsskogan Family Park. Along the way, it crosses a bridge over the Tromselva River and passes Tronesfossen waterfall. The distance, elevation gain and trail markings are different points to consider when planning this hike.

There are several parking options in Trones for the Tunnsjøåsen trail: at Trones Church, Namsskogan Hotel, Namsskogan Family Park and Trones School, where the signposted trail begins. Check local parking options before travelling, as parking regulations may change.

Cycling route and historic trails

The Trones–Sønningsvatnet–Trones cycling route starts at Namsskogan Family Park and follows a gravel forest road to Sønningsvatnet. The lake is about 5 km from the park. When comparing it with the Tunnsjøåsen trail, it is important to note that 4 km is the length of the circular trail, while about 5 km is the lake’s distance from the park.

The historic “Prestvegen” trail ran between Trones and Røyrvik. This means the region’s character includes a historic connection between the two places, as well as nature and outdoor activities.

Getting here and finding your way around

Trones station is on the Nordland Line; Trones can be reached by train from Trondheim, Steinkjer and Mosjøen. A shuttle service to the hotel and campsite can be ordered from the station. If you plan to travel by train, check current train services and arrange the bookable transfer in advance.

There are parking spaces close by at the recreational snowmobile trails in Trones. As parking options may change, it is a good idea to check locally before setting out.

Namsskogan as the wider regional setting

Børgefjell National Park also extends into the municipality of Namsskogan. It protects a large natural area that is largely free from technical development, with extensive wilderness areas and biological diversity. Large bodies of water, waterfalls and rivers are part of the national park’s landscape. This helps distinguish attractions specifically located in Trones, such as Park Nordica and the Tunnsjøåsen trail, from the wider natural setting of Namsskogan.
