Namsos: City History, Museums and Trails
Accommodation in Namsos
Namsos offers a range of reasons to visit: the history of its post-war reconstruction, museums with a variety of focuses, and marked trails. You can explore its architecture and city history, or discover art, music and regional collections. For outdoor activities, options include a circular hiking trail, a network of trails near the centre and a marked route to the city mountain Klompen.
Cityscape and reconstruction
Namsos samfunnshus is of significant architectural and cultural-historical value. It is a central feature of the city, rebuilt after the Second World War. The building combines town hall functions with a community centre, a cinema and a café. The samfunnshus thus offers a tangible way to explore Namsos’ architectural and cultural history.
The city plan is also part of this picture: the centre is based on a grid plan by Brente Steders Regulering (BSR). The street network has been preserved, and the buildings are largely authentic. The individual samfunnshus and the wider street layout offer two different perspectives on the city: the importance of a central building and the preserved layout of the centre.
Museums: regional history, art and music
Located near the centre, Namdalsmuseet comprises 24 buildings and more than 13,000 objects and photographs. Its collection focuses on traditional rural culture, the history of forestry and the outlying areas, and hospital history. Its themes range from rural culture to a specific aspect of social history. For trip planning, this overview helps distinguish the museum from the city’s art and music offerings.
Kunstmuseet NordTrøndelag in Namsos presents Norwegian contemporary art in a varied exhibition programme; the individual exhibitions change. Workshops and guided tours for children and adults are offered in connection with the exhibitions. Tailored activities are available by arrangement, and formats may vary depending on the exhibition.
At Trønderrockmuseet, you can learn more about the development of Trønderrock, various artists, and national and local social history. Verdensrommet has a distinctive exhibition history: it was moved from a garage to the museum and rebuilt there exactly as it had been before. The Festplassen is also home to a well-known bronze statue of Åge Aleksandersen, created by Errol Fyrileiv.
Hiking trails and outdoor activities
Bymarka is a network of well-marked trails, with several starting points and numerous hiking destinations near the centre of Namsos. Another marked route leads from the Rock City Opplevelsessenter to the city mountain Klompen. It is marked with the red DNT T symbols; handrails and, in some places, cast steps are provided on the steepest sections.
Brurunden is a universally designed, marked circular hiking trail. It runs along Spillumsstranda and the old railway line, and across the listed Gamle Namsbru and the Namsosbru. The route also passes through two tunnels and over a railway bridge. It is family-friendly and frequently used by Namsos residents. Comparing the routes reveals different options: a network of trails with several starting points, a marked route to Klompen and a circular route with a railway connection.
A rail-bike ride on the old Namsosbanen tracks starts in the centre and runs 13 kilometres towards Skage in Overhalla. Check availability separately with the operator. In Spillum, just south of Namsos, Norsk Sagbruksmuseum Spillum Dampsag & Høvleri preserves a historic sawmill. There is a self-guided route along the production line, from log to finished product. As visitor arrangements may change, check current visiting options in advance.
