Levanger: Wooden Town, Markets and Fjord Setting
Accommodation in Levanger
Levanger lies on the Trondheimsfjord and the Bay of Levanger. The centre is characterised by a well-preserved historic wooden town environment: it is of national importance and shows what urban wooden architecture looked like at the beginning of the 20th century. Heritage, traditional markets and walks in the centre sit alongside nature and history destinations across the wider Levanger area.
Historic wooden town environment in the centre
Since 2018, streets, squares, parks and buildings in central Levanger have been protected as a cultural environment under the Cultural Heritage Act. The historic wooden town environment is an example of what urban wooden architecture looked like at the beginning of the 20th century. Notable places include Dampskipsbrygga, also known as Innherredsbrygga. After the town fire of 1897, it was one of the first buildings in the town to be rebuilt; today it has been fully restored.
The green spaces and open areas are also part of the protected townscape. The park axis between Dampskipskaia and the railway forms Levanger’s main green artery. Allmenningen lies between the quay and the houses on Sjøgata. The area remains open and has significant cultural and historical value. In the centre, you will find both historic buildings and public open spaces that showcase different aspects of Levanger’s cultural environment.
The Bymuseet i Levanger manages six historic buildings in Levanger. Dampskipsbrygga is one of them and houses a historical exhibition. Its name, Innherredsbrygga, and its reconstruction after the fire give the building a special place in the town’s history.
Markets and a walk through town
Levangermartnan is one of Norway’s oldest and most important markets. In Levanger’s traditional trading calendar, it is scheduled for July or August; check the specific dates for the year before travelling. Another long-standing market in the Levanger area is Marsimartnan, held around the turn of February and March; the dates vary. The two markets therefore take place at different times of the year and may be relevant to your plans depending on when you travel.
A self-guided walk through the centre introduces some of the best-preserved historic wooden houses and is accompanied by a smartphone. If this walk is part of your plans, check digital access before travelling. The route offers its own way to experience the historic townscape, while Levangermartnan and Marsimartnan are seasonal events.
Trails and nature in the Levanger area
Four marked hiking trails start at Stadionparken, which is centrally located in Levanger, and range from 1.2 to 4.8 kilometres in length. Their different lengths give you a practical guide when choosing a trail for your stay. The Falstadstien connects Falstadsenteret with Falstadskogen and is about 1,600 metres long.
The Eidsbotn bird sanctuary in the Levanger area covers about 2.3 square kilometres of water. Nearly 200 bird species have been recorded there. Eidsbotten Fugleskjul is a birdwatching tower. General access is permitted in the nature reserve, provided that nature is not harmed. For travellers who want to contrast town history with nature, the trails and protected area offer a different focus from the historic centre.
Historic places in the wider Levanger area
In the wider Levanger area, Falstadsenteret in Ekne is a museum, human rights centre and memorial site associated with the Second World War prisoner camp. Falstadskogen is a national memorial and war cemetery. The Falstadstien connects these two places. Near Munkeby, close to Okkenhaug, are the ruins of a Cistercian monastery believed to have been built in the second half of the 12th century. On Ytterøy, Berghaugen brings to life the history of sulphur and copper pyrite mining, which dates back to 1630.
Getting there and choosing a hotel
