Høylandet: Waterfall, Wetlands and Mountain Views
Accommodation in Høylandet
Grongstadfossen has a 75-metre drop and is located near the centre of Høylandet. The waterfall is signposted from Fylkesveg 17, and you can drive to a viewpoint by the waterfall. This makes it easy to include this striking natural landmark in your day-trip plans. The municipality encompasses a valley area along the Søråa, which flows south into the Namsen, and along the Kongsmoelva, which flows from the watershed north into the Indre Foldafjorden.
Rivers, a bridge and wetlands
The covered Hammer bru bridge crosses the Søråa at Hammer, south of the centre. Nature reserves also feature prominently in the area’s natural landscape. Flakkan protects an important wetland with vegetation, birdlife and other wildlife. The Øie nature reserve has picnic areas, toilets and a birdwatching tower for observing wetland and wildlife.
The protected areas each have distinct landscape features. Hattmoenget is a nutrient-rich fen where calcareous springs create habitats for orchids and rare sedge species. Grytbogen-Kubåsen has one of the largest elm stands in the county, as well as numerous rare plant species. Those interested in wetlands and plants will find a variety of features here, from birdwatching in Øie to the distinctive habitats of the fen.
Marked routes and activities
Høylandet has five marked cycling routes, including Bremburunden, Lille Flakkenrunden and Øievatnet Rundt. Route conditions may vary by season. In addition, IL-Hållingen and Høylandet municipality jointly list nine marked mountain hikes. This gives you a choice of both cycling routes and designated hikes when planning, with each route offering a different kind of outing.
Bremburunden is a 4.5-kilometre circular route for walking, cycling or pushing a stroller; its trail conditions may also vary by season. For comparison, the hike to Indre Høgaksla is about 10 kilometres long and leads to a summit 691 metres high. From there, views extend across Høylandet, Øyvatnet, Ålmesgrønningen and Storgrønningen to the southeast, and Hakavatnet and the ocean to the west. Visibility and ground conditions can change with the seasons. The route lengths offer a practical way to compare these two hiking options by distance.
For another activity, Høylandet has an 18-hole disc golf course in scenic surroundings. Hållinghallen climbing centre has four auto-belay lines, seven top-rope or lead-climbing lines, and a large bouldering area. The centre can be rented. Alongside nature outings, disc golf and climbing offer different ways to spend your time here.
Culture and local experiences
Every two years, Norsk Revyfestival hosts the Norwegian revue championships in Høylandet. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact dates directly with the organiser. Høylandet kirke is a wooden church built in 1860, with a long-church layout and 250 seats. It adds another cultural highlight alongside the recurring festival.
Mevassvik Gård offers bee safaris that include a visit to an apiary and a honey tasting. Tyldum Gårdsbakeri, a small farm bakery, is located in the centre. Check opening hours before visiting. Alongside nature and activities, these offerings add a local culinary and cultural focus to your plans.
