Stranda combines an octagonal wooden church in the town center with illuminated trails, forest hikes and winter activities. When looking for a hotel in Stranda, it helps to distinguish between activities in town, a specific hiking route and attractions in the nearby area.

Church and Local History

In the heart of Stranda stands Stranda kyrkje, also known as Sløgstad kyrkje. The octagonal wooden church dates from 1838 and was consecrated on 30 September. Its altarpiece is believed to date from around 1500. The building therefore brings together two points in time: the year the church was built and the much earlier, only approximate date of the altarpiece.

Two Trails with Different Profiles

Elvastien is in central Stranda and is considered an easy, accessible trail for all ages. It is 0.55 kilometers each way, has an elevation gain of seven meters and takes about 20 minutes. On dark evenings, the trail is lit and can also be walked in the evening. As practical trail details may be updated, check the latest information before your visit if needed.

The Barlia og Skaffarhaugen hiking route starts at Stranda Stadium and runs for about one kilometer each way through wooded terrain above the settlement. A detour follows a path to the summit of Skaffarhaugen, from where the view stretches north toward the fjord. The route passes through a recreational area protected by the state. Unlike central Elvastien, this route focuses on the forest section and the detour to the viewpoint.

Courses and Winter Sports

Uteguiden offers several ski touring and freeride courses in Stranda. The three-day advanced ski touring course covers avalanche awareness, trip planning, equipment and safe route planning. The introductory ski touring course is aimed particularly at skiers with little experience in alpine ski touring. The introductory freeride course covers techniques for loose snow and avalanche awareness. The advanced freeride course is for people who have completed the introductory course, as well as experienced off-piste skiers with basic skills. Course content and requirements therefore vary by focus. Course offerings may change; check the latest options and requirements before planning.

Nearby, Stranda Ski Resort has seven ski lifts, a conveyor belt, a children’s park, a terrain park and 18 runs. In winter, the resort’s summer ball court becomes an ice rink. To travel from Ålesund Airport Vigra or Hovden in Ørsta to Strandafjellet, you can take a bus or drive. Transport arrangements may change, so check them before making specific plans.

In the Wider Stranda Destination

The wider Stranda destination also includes places in Geiranger. Fossevandringa is a marked trail there, measuring 1.04 kilometers each way, with 327 steps and an elevation gain of 96 meters. The ascent is estimated to take 20 minutes; the route is open year-round. Compared with central Elvastien, the trails differ considerably in elevation gain and number of steps. Route details and accessibility may change with local conditions, so check the information before planning.

Sightseeing cruises on the Geirangerfjord are offered with durations of 75 minutes or two hours. The cruise passes the waterfalls The Seven Sisters, The Suitor and The Bridal Veil; durations and routes may change. The Norwegian Fjord Centre is the visitor and interpretation center for the Geirangerfjord World Heritage area. Its exhibitions and interactive displays explain how the fjord landscape was formed and describe the area’s flora and fauna. The restored post road over Ljøbrekka is also considered a tourist destination and visitor activity within the wider Stranda destination, and helps preserve cultural history.
