In Ørsta, you can make the cultural heritage sites in the centre or the hikes the focus of your stay. If you’re looking for a hotel in Ørsta, deciding whether you’d rather focus on historic sites or a particular mountain peak can help with your trip planning. The Kulturminneløypa connects several places; each hiking destination has its own starting points and landmarks.

Cultural heritage sites and local history

The Kulturminneløypa runs from Gravhaugane på Velle via Kjempehaugen in Vik and the Kunsthuset to Svendsengarden. There is also a café at the destination. The trail thus connects several stops, each offering a different insight into Ørsta’s history and cultural heritage.

Gravhaugane på Velle are Iron Age burial mounds or funerary monuments, located in present-day central Ørsta, outside Ørsta ungdomsskule. Kjempehaugen in Vik is also an Iron Age burial mound. According to tradition, Tik i Vik was buried there. Kjempehaugen is right by the E39 and next to Tik Café & Restaurant; this location can help you find your way.

Kunsthuset is now used for art exhibitions. As a locally significant cultural heritage site, it also symbolises Ørsta’s industrial history. The stop thus connects contemporary cultural use with the memory of the town’s industrial past.

At the end of the Kulturminneløypa stands Svendsengarden, which is considered a cultural heritage site of regional significance. The municipality of Ørsta chose it as its millennium site in 2000. Together with the café at the destination, this stop makes the end of the trail another stop on the cultural walk.

Hikes and viewpoints

There are several options for a hike with views of the town. Kyrkjetinden is a peak close to town, with lovely views both on the way up and from the summit. The ascent via Skytjedalen is considered particularly appealing. Rambjørhornet is described as a short summit hike, offering views of Ørsta sentrum as well as Mosegga, Sandhornet, Brekkeheida, Kjerringa, Saudehornet and Vassdalstinden. The hike is suitable as a training, afternoon, evening or Sunday outing with children.

Skålavegen is used in both summer and winter. There are lamps along the route from the waterworks to the third water house. Skålavegen is also accessible by bus: the stop where you get off is on Kyrkjegata, at the first stop after the roundabout in the centre. This is a different set of directions from those for the ascent of Saudehornet.

Gapahuken Skåla is a viewpoint above Ørsta sentrum. There is a shelter with benches there. The hike can start in the centre, for example at the Amfi shopping centre, where you can also park. This makes it possible to plan the viewpoint, a place to rest and a possible starting point in the centre together.

Starting point for the ascent of Saudehornet

The ascent of Saudehornet starts in Ørsta sentrum and follows Vikegeila to the water treatment plant. There is a car park there. Road and parking conditions may change; check them before your hike. These directions give you a specific starting point, while the other hikes described each have their own landmarks.
