Discover Midsund: stairways, coast and culture
Accommodation in Midsund
When looking for a hotel in Midsund, you can first consider which themes you want to shape your stay: stairways and views, fishing and engineering history, or activities on the water. The different routes, places and events offer practical starting points.
Exploring Midsund on foot: stairs, heights and views
Near Midsund are the Midsundtrappene: mountain hikes up stone stairways in an island landscape shaped by fjords, the sea and distinctive mountains. The first section, Kumlokket, was built in 2016 by Sherpas from Nepal. From there, you can enjoy a lovely view of the centre of Midsund.
Also nearby, a clearly marked path with stairs and trail markers crosses the western ridge to Rørsethornet, at around 659 metres. The hike to Digergubben and Midsundhornet, by contrast, starts in the centre of Midsund, at the bridge over the Bakkeelva. The path is steep; constructed stairs make it accessible to many hikers. Another route leads up Aksla via a staircase with 500 steps. It is considered a suitable evening walk.
The information about these routes highlights different features: Kumlokket is notable for its view of the centre, while Rørsethornet stands out for the elevation of its destination. The steep path and constructed stairs are characteristic of the routes to Digergubben and Midsundhornet; the Aksla route is distinguished by its 500 steps and its description as an evening walk.
Fishing, engines and a festival
Antonbua is a traditional Midsund building used for deep-sea fishing and fish processing, with an exhibition on the history of these industries. Guided tours can be arranged there for groups throughout the year on request. The Opstad Museum focuses on old engines dating from 1920 to 1986, including around 30 old tractors and boat engines. The two places therefore have different themes: Antonbua focuses on fishing and processing, while Opstad is about engines.
The park by Antonbua is centrally located between Coop and Antonbua. Its facilities include various play equipment, seating and a small amphitheatre; visitors can also take a refreshing dip there. Midsundfestivalen was founded in 2005 and has been held annually ever since. The programme includes concerts during the day and evening, a church concert, food and drink, sales and information stalls, and activities for children and adults. Individual performers and schedules may vary.
Kayaking, diving and ferries
The Industriruta kayaking route runs from Sandneset campsite to the centre of Midsund. Along the way, it passes fish reception facilities and aquaculture sites, as well as beautiful beaches and small coves. Conditions and launch points may change; check the information before setting out. Another kayaking route near Midsund goes from Vågsmyran to a small, secluded lagoon and a beach for swimming near Rørset. From there, you can enjoy a lovely view across the fjord towards Jendemsfjellet; sea conditions vary.
The two kayaking routes differ in their destinations and courses: Industriruta passes fishing and aquaculture facilities, as well as beaches and coves, before reaching the centre. The route from Vågsmyran, by contrast, leads to a secluded lagoon and a beach for swimming with views across the fjord towards Jendemsfjellet. Wreck diving is also possible in Midsund, including at the wreck of the D/S Ørland in Bløbukta. German aircraft sank the ship there on 23 April 1940. The Midsundet diving area is known for its diverse marine life.
Midsund Marina is in the centre and has a guest harbour with toilets, showers and a laundry room. Midsund also has two ferry connections: to Romsdal in the northeast and Sunnmøre in the southwest. Check the timetable for your specific journey.
Winter tours
Ski touring is also one of Midsund’s winter activities: six different routes are listed for the area. How safe the conditions are for ski touring depends on the snow cover.
