Runde is Norway’s and Scandinavia’s southernmost large seabird cliff area. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: an extended hike, birdwatching, or insights into natural and cultural history. The trails, tours and seasonal opportunities offer different ways to plan your stay. If you’re looking for hotels for a trip to Runde, you can start by considering which aspects of the island you’d like to focus on.

Birdlife and protected areas

About 230 different bird species have been recorded on Runde. This number may change as further observations are made. Puffins are best observed in the evenings from April to July; actual sightings depend on conditions. This timeframe can help with planning, but it does not guarantee a sighting.

Runde has both nature reserves and bird protection areas. The bird protection areas around the island are marked with signs or fences; entry is prohibited. Dogs must be kept on a leash on Runde. Keep these guidelines in mind when planning walks and hikes, especially if you want to experience the cliffs and birdlife.

Hiking trails and navigation

A moderately difficult circular hike on Runde passes the lighthouse and the bird cliffs. It is 10.5 km long, takes 5 hours and involves a total elevation gain of 495 metres. This makes it suitable as a standalone, longer activity in your itinerary. Route details may vary depending on trail conditions; check the latest route information before setting out.

The marked trail across the high moor runs over stone paths and wooden boardwalks. The circular trail on Runde is well marked and maintained, and information boards at the various cliffs describe the bird species found there. The trail to the bird cliffs usually starts at the car park in Goksøyra. As trail markings and local access rules may change, it’s worth checking the latest information before setting out.

Guided tours and seasonal opportunities

The nature guides at the Runde Environmental Centre take visitors on tours in the mountains and along the coast throughout the year. On a guided mountain hike to the Runde fyr lighthouse, a nature guide tells stories about the island, a treasure find and Runde’s natural history. Check current booking and seasonal availability for this specific tour.

The timing varies depending on the experience: the best time to observe puffins is in the evenings from April to July. During the summer season, boat tours around the island depart from Runde harbour, weather permitting. If you’d like to include a nature guide, birdwatching or a boat tour in your itinerary, you can take these timeframes into account when choosing when to visit.

Lighthouse and cultural history

Runde fyr lighthouse was built in 1767. It is designated as both a visitor lighthouse and an accommodation lighthouse, and has been protected under Norway’s Cultural Heritage Act since 2000. Its long history adds a tangible connection to the island’s architectural and cultural heritage to the nature experiences on offer.

A 4-metre-high standing stone stands at the western edge of a burial mound near the house foundation at Langeneset. The remains of the house foundations there show that the site was used during three main periods: at the end of the Neolithic, in the Late Bronze Age and in the Pre-Roman Iron Age. On Runde, you’ll find not only traces of birdlife but also evidence of settlement dating back a long way.

An exhibition at the Runde Environmental Centre covers seabirds, coastal ecology and the Runde treasure. It consists of about 57,000 silver and gold coins from more than 400 different mints. As exhibits and access rules may change, check the Centre’s latest information before visiting.

Practical information for your stay

There are seasonal toilets at the car park in Goksøyra. The Runde Environmental Centre has toilets and showers available year-round. As visitor facilities may change their opening arrangements, check the latest information if needed. This will help you plan longer hiking days, visits to the Centre and the best season for your trip.
