Between Coastal Paths, Peaks and History

Gjemnes brings together several themes for planning a trip: paths by the water, summit hikes and visible traces of local history. The options range from the short Strandstien Angvik to the circular hike over six peaks near Torvikbukt. The season can also shape your plans: Reinsfjellet is a hiking destination in both summer and winter, while the trip to Silsethytta is described as a ski tour. Churches, a museum complex and archaeological traces add to the outdoor destinations.

Archaeological Traces and Churches

Ikornneset is home to around ten coastal burial mounds, along with agricultural terraces and traces of old farms. The mounds consist of varying amounts of rounded stones. The two largest are approximately 15 metres wide and 2 metres high. Their age is uncertain: they may date from the Early Iron Age, probably from between 0 and about 600 AD. The archaeological traces give the area a historical dimension, although their dating cannot be established more precisely.

Ikornneset is also a bathing spot with a guest pier and a walking path or cultural heritage route. Here, a coastal outing and history come together. For a different kind of cultural walk, try Strandstien Angvik: this short path is connected to local culture and history and is lit in the evening.

The churches also differ in their building histories. Øre Church was built in 1865 and is classified as a listed church; Gjemnes Church dates from 1893. Osmarka Chapel was built in 1910 and consecrated for church use in 1912. Its interior was extensively restored in 2008. Skeid is also home to a museum complex belonging to Gjemnes Municipality.

Paths Along the River and Through Angvik

Elvastien runs alongside the river at Batnfjordsøra. After about two kilometres, there is an opportunity to fish at a ramp. From Molde or Kristiansund, reach the path via the E39; parking is available at the municipal building. Check current road conditions before setting out. For Elvastien, the approximate distance to the fishing spot is a useful point of reference, while Strandstien Angvik is described as a short cultural and historical path.

A section of Strandstien Angvik near Angvik Gamle Handelssted is considered accessible to wheelchair users; its gradient is described as satisfactory. This information applies to the section mentioned, not to the entire path. Confirm accessibility conditions locally before your trip.

Circular Hikes and Summit Views

“Torvikbukt 6 topper” is a circular hike over six mountain peaks around the village. They include Holtafjellet at 610 metres, Storlimana at 532 metres, Nebba at 658 metres, Røtå at 661 metres, Reinsfjellet at 994 metres and Nøssa at 563 metres. The hike starts at Gjemneshallen in the centre of Torvikbukt. Check the starting point against local signs before setting out.

Reinsfjellet is a well-known landmark in Nordmøre and a popular hiking destination in both summer and winter. From the 994-metre summit, the view extends across large parts of Nordmøre. The usual ascent follows the road from Torvikdalen. There is a shelter in the house by the fitness trail post; check route information locally before setting out.

Another hike continues from Raudberggruva to Blånebba, which stands 764 metres high. From there, you can enjoy a view down towards Batnfjord. Entry to the Raudberggruva mine tunnel is prohibited because it is unsafe. The walls of the former miners’ house still stand nearby; an information board covers the history of the mining operation.

A Ski Tour as a Winter Option

A ski tour leads to Silsethytta by Silsetvannet, following groomed trails through gently rolling terrain and open pine forest. Along the way, there are views of the Romsdal Mountains. Before your winter tour, check whether the trails are currently groomed. This distinguishes the ski tour from the hiking options: Reinsfjellet is used as a hiking destination in both seasons, while the Silsethytta tour is a specific winter option.

The options offer different types of routes for planning: a short cultural heritage walk, a riverside path with a fishing opportunity, a loop over six peaks and a ski tour through forest and rolling terrain. Churches, the museum complex and the traces at Ikornneset round out the selection with different ways to explore the history of Gjemnes.
