Giske: Island History, Lighthouse and Cave
Accommodation in Giske
Giske brings together a range of travel interests: church and archaeological history, a lighthouse, cave, trails, beach and bird sanctuary offer reasons to plan your visit from different perspectives. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider which visits and activities you want to shape your stay.
Church History and Archaeological Finds
Giske Church was built in the 12th century as the manor chapel of the powerful Giske family. You can arrange a guided tour of the church through the church office; check the booking details before your visit.
The Godøy Coastal Museum has a different focus. Its exhibitions are spread across three floors of an older school building. The archaeological exhibition displays finds from the municipality’s four islands, including rich Stone Age finds from Godøya and unique Bronze Age finds from Giske. It therefore covers several islands as well as multiple historical periods.
Another archaeological site is Skjonghelleren on Valderøya in Giske. The cave lies 57 metres above sea level and extends 100 metres into the mountain. Traces of Stone Age settlements and animal remains more than 30,000 years old have been found there. The cave is a destination in its own right along the “Utom fjellet” trail, which runs along the western side of Valderøya.
Trails and Viewpoints
The “Utom fjellet” loop is 3.4 kilometres long and can be used with a pushchair or wheelchair. As trail surfaces and accessibility can change, it is advisable to check these details seasonally before your trip. On Godøya, Fjellfotvegen offers a different kind of trail: this gently hilly gravel road runs between Juv in the west and the residential area near Leitebakken in the east.
Another natural highlight is the panorama from the summit of Storhornet on Godøya, which offers 360° views. Conditions on the mountain vary by season, so take this into account when planning your hike.
Alnes: Lighthouse and Beach
Alnes offers views of a variety of coastal attractions. Sandvika at Alnes is one of Giske municipality’s sandy beaches. Visitors can also see Alnes Lighthouse and the old lighthouse keeper’s house. The lighthouse is protected under Norway’s Cultural Heritage Act. You can book a local guide for your visit. Visiting and booking details may change, so check them before making plans.
The café at the Alnes Lighthouse visitor centre serves traditional Norwegian food. The menu and service may also change.
Nature and Activities on the Water
The Giske bird sanctuary is an important resting place for many species of wetland birds. This is a distinct nature attraction alongside the trails and viewpoints. The dive sites also have a particular geographic setting: most are located among small islands and skerries and can only be reached by boat. If you are considering Giske for a hotel stay, you can tailor your plans to your own interests—whether that is cultural history, hiking trails, bird conservation or activities on the water.
