Vebenstad on Averøy: School History, Burial Mounds and Ristuva
Accommodation in Vebenstad
Vebenstad on Averøy brings together school history, prehistoric traces and a marked trail to Ristuva. The Omfarøya outdoor recreation area nearby is also a useful landmark when planning your stay.
School History and Prehistoric Traces
Averøy School Museum is housed in the old school building in Vebenstad. The building was constructed around 1910; its interior has been preserved unchanged and includes period furniture and fittings. This gives the school museum its authentic character. There are also nine automatically protected burial mounds at three sites in Vebenstad, dating from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. The area's historical traces therefore range from prehistoric eras to the school building from around 1910.
Nearby is Bogestelle, a stone ring at the northern tip of Vebenstadkollen. It is considered a hiding place for shooting with a bow and arrow. A kayak route mentions a detour to Søbstadklubben, where there are 17 rock carvings, known as hunting depictions, with motifs of whales, boats and birds. These places add further forms of cultural traces to the insights into the past.
Ristuva and Getting Around
The marked trail to Mount Ristuva runs from Vebenstad in Bådalen towards Kvernes; Ristuva lies between Vebenstad and Kvernes. There is a bus stop at the trailhead in Vebenstad, with good connections to both towns. County Road Fv. 6084 is also useful for getting around by road: it runs from Vebenstad via Fv. 64 to Nedal. From the summit of Ristuva, views extend across outer Nordmøre and towards Krifast. The route and the views offer two different perspectives on the landscape: the connection towards Kvernes and the view over the region from the summit.
Omfarøya Outdoor Recreation Area
The public Omfarøya outdoor recreation area is located in the Bådalen area, near Vebenstad. A signposted turnoff leads there from Vebenstad. Public parking is available for visitors. Facilities on site include a short walking trail, paths, benches and a spacious dry toilet. It is open in summer and maintained by the local health association. Omfarøya is one of Averøy municipality's seven state-protected outdoor recreation areas. The toilet's seasonal opening is a practical detail to bear in mind when planning your visit.
A Wider View of Averøy
On Averøy, the Atlantic Ocean Road connects the island to the mainland via seven bridges that cross a chain of small islands. The road is also part of National Cycle Route 1, which follows the entire Norwegian coast. Visitors can fish from Myrbærholmbrua. The Svevestien trail loops around Eldhusøya, one of the islands crossed by the Atlantic Ocean Road, and offers views of the road and the sea beyond.
Kvernes offers another cultural and historical highlight on Averøy. Kvernes Stave Church is Norway's only stave church built after the Middle Ages. Its interior features acanthus paintings and a model of the 32-gun frigate Nordstjernen. Kvernes is also a stop on the Coastal Pilgrim Path from Stavanger to Nidaros. In the Kvernes cultural area, developed paths with historical information take visitors through more than 4,000 years of history; the route can be explored in about an hour. Four or five summer concerts are held each year in Kvernes Church. Check the dates for the year of your visit.
