Stamsund combines a harbor atmosphere, fishing history and art with opportunities for outdoor activities. The village lies in a natural harbor on the southern coast of the island of Vestvågøy. Red rorbuer, rugged peaks and boats on crystal-clear water shape the landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Stamsund, these different sides of the village may influence your travel plans.

Harbor and fishing history

Stamsund’s rorbuer were built to house fishermen who took part in the seasonal cod fishery. Stamsund was once one of the most important fishing harbors in Lofoten and was known for cod-liver oil and racks for drying cod. Cod-liver oil and racks for drying cod can still be seen in the harbor. The harbor scene thus brings together the red rorbuer and boats on the water with traces of the area’s earlier fishing industry.

Visitors can walk along the waterfront and watch fishing boats unload their catch. Whether you can observe this depends on the harbor’s daily operations. A walk by the water therefore also passes through a place where the fishing history is still visible and harbor work is part of everyday life.

Church, gallery and festival

Stamsund kirke has national cultural-historical significance and is an exceptionally good example of 1930s functionalism in this part of the country. It is also considered especially worthy of preservation. For travelers interested in architecture, the church is a distinct cultural landmark in Stamsund.

Galleri 2 presents changing exhibitions throughout the year by internationally renowned artists from several countries. One work on display there with a remarkable story is the painting “The Dream of Atlantis”: it returned to Stamsund after orbiting the Earth several times. While the church building can be associated with a particular architectural period, the gallery’s displays change with its exhibitions.

From May 24 to 28, 2022, Stamsund hosted the Stamsund Theatre Festival, an international festival of contemporary performing arts.

Activities between fjord and mountains

Stamsund also offers a range of outdoor activities. From here, you can paddle into quiet fjords or hike in the rugged mountains behind the village. Stamsund also has a ski area. The activities offer different perspectives: paddling focuses on the fjords, while hiking takes you into the mountainous terrain behind the village. Along with a walk along the waterfront, the options range from the harbor’s edge to the landscapes around Stamsund.

Culture in the wider destination of Vestvågøy

The wider destination of Vestvågøy offers additional cultural and historical highlights. Vestvågøy is home to Northern Europe’s largest nausttuft, as well as graves and other cultural heritage sites from the Iron Age and Viking Age. The Lofotr Viking Museum in Borg includes an 83-meter-long reconstruction of the largest Viking Age longhouse discovered to date. The museum also contains the only site where an actual chieftain’s farmstead has been confirmed. These regional examples add further cultural and historical points of interest in Vestvågøy to the story of Stamsund’s fishing history.
