Fotlandsvåg is on the northwestern side of the island of Osterøy, at the end of Fotlandsvågen, an arm of the Osterfjord. County Road 567 runs through the village. If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Fotlandsvåg, the village name and its location on the fjord arm provide a specific point of reference for your plans.

Location and history at the fjord arm

The history of Fjordslottet connects Fotlandsvåg with Bergen: Bergen merchant Carl Joacim Hambro settled here in 1851. He built the main house on a hill immediately behind the end of Fotlandsvågen. The connection to Hambro and the location of the house firmly anchor the village’s history in the landscape at the end of the fjord arm.

Sauna, farm shop and cheese farm

A special option right in Fotlandsvåg is Osterøy Badstue, a self-service, wood-fired sauna on the riverbank. You can access the river for a swim via a platform with a ladder. This means the experience combines a sauna visit with access to the water. Check the conditions that apply to your visit in advance.

Osterøy Ysteri is located in Bernes in Fotlandsvåg. Its farm shop sells hides, yarn, wool and firewood, as well as seasonal produce from its own garden and from nature. As the products may vary by season, it is advisable to confirm current availability with the business. Guests can also take tours of the cheese dairy and the farm’s barn; arrange your visit in advance. In summer, visits are also possible at the farm in Tyssebotn, where the animals spend the summer. This summer visit takes place there, not in Fotlandsvåg.

Cycling and hiking around Fotlandsvåg

An approximately 27-kilometre circular cycling route runs from Lonevåg via Storavatnet, Fotlandsvåg, Hosanger and Kossdalen, returning to Lonevåg. The full route is estimated to take about three hours. Fotlandsvåg is one section of a longer loop, not its starting or ending point. For the ride described, you can bring food or plan to stop at Fjordslottet or Mjøsdalen Landhandleri; check in advance whether this works for your chosen date.

The Åsheimveten route is nearby. The described starting options are a gravel road or a steeper path. The well-marked path, described as being of high quality, meets the gravel road shortly before Fotlandssætra, where the road ends. From the summit of Åsheimveten, the view extends over the Osterfjord and Nordhordland. Trail conditions and markings can change, so it’s worth checking for updates before setting out. Hikers who aren’t staying at the hotel are advised to park at the sports ground and start their hike there; check the current parking situation in advance.

Cultural destinations across Osterøy

If you’d like to include other places on the island besides Fotlandsvåg, Osterøy offers a cultural setting of its own. The Osterøy Museum is in Gjerstad, in the middle of the island. Its main areas of focus are the history of textiles and clothing, weaving, local building traditions, and the local history of Osterøy and Nordhordland.

Den Grøne Fabrikken is located in Mjøsvågen, in a restored furniture factory set in a historic workshop and boathouse environment by the sea. Today, it is used for art, culture, experiences and events. Its offerings include creative workshops, painting classes, yoga sessions, talks and concerts; the programme may change. These destinations are part of the wider Osterøy destination and should be distinguished from the offerings right in Fotlandsvåg.
