Øystese offers several clearly distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: trails along the Øysteseelva, the historic Storeteigen farmstead, art on the fjord shore and a beach in the centre. The routes also differ in length and character.

Hiking trails by distance and character

The Skulpturrunden is a short, easy 1.5-kilometre walk along the river and shore. The 1.7-kilometre Elvestien runs alongside the Øysteseelva and includes a short detour on a path down to the river. The difference in length is 200 metres. The 2.5-kilometre Svartabrua-løypa runs along the Øysteseelva over asphalt, gravel and paths; it is suitable for strollers throughout.

The 2.6-kilometre Utsiktsløypa is somewhat challenging; there is a bench with a view at its highest point. For longer routes, consider the 5-kilometre Børveløypa, which includes a section along a forest path, and Åsen rundt, at 6.2 kilometres. This route passes the golf course at Børve. This lets you match the distance to specific trail features rather than choosing by kilometres alone.

Culture and art in Øystese

Storeteigen is a well-preserved farmstead. The 3.5-kilometre Storeteigen-bygdetun-runden passes through the historic farmstead; the museum grounds include a smallholding and a furniture workshop from the early 19th century. If you would like to combine a walk with a historic site, both the farm complex and these two specific buildings provide points of interest.

Hardanger Skyspace is part of Kabuso’s cultural offering. The installation is located on the fjord shore in Øystese, next to the Kabuso art centre, and can be visited at sunrise and sunset. At these times, the artwork creates a changing experience of colour, light, sky and space. This makes the visit different from the routes, where distance and surface are the main considerations.

Beach and lake nearby

The beach in the centre of Øystese has toilets and good parking facilities. You can get there by bus, bicycle or on foot. Five kilometres from Øystese, beside the county road to Porsmyr/Fyksesund, lies Lake Skårsvatnet, also known as Gullfiskevatnet. The lake contains large numbers of golden orfe, or goldfish, which are easy to see.

Golf, a farm visit and winter trails

The Hardanger Golf Club in Børve, Øystese, has a 6-hole golf course and a 200-metre driving range. In the centre, Spildegarden welcomes groups of at least ten people for a farm visit with a guided tour and a tasting of its products. If you plan this visit, confirm the group arrangements before your trip.

For cross-country skiing near Øystese, Sjusete skisenter offers kilometres of groomed trails, both lit and unlit, as well as a biathlon facility.
