Fjæra: Fjord, Church and Activities
Accommodation in Fjæra
When looking for a hotel for a trip to Fjæra, you can use the local sights and activities as a guide when choosing your destination. The area’s local character includes a historic wooden church, a public quay with fjord activities and a range of things to do. The Hylling route is distinct from the three Via Ferrata Kyrkjeveggen routes in its length and anchored steps and cables. Consider which experiences are most important to your travel plans.
Church and local crafts
Fjæra kyrkje is a white wooden church built in 1891 as a Gothic Revival long church. Another local offering is Fjæra kunst og handverk. The shop opened on 15 September 2026 and sells locally made goods, including Hardangerlys candles and homemade baked goods. Fjæra thus brings together a church with clearly defined architectural features and a selection of locally made products.
Quay, fjord and private sauna
The public quay in the village of Fjæra serves as the departure point for the MS Langfoss fjord cruise. SUP boards, kayaks and canoes are also available to rent there. On the cruise, the MS Langfoss passes steep mountains and remote farms. A cruise and equipment rental are different ways to experience the fjord. Check departures and rental options before your trip, as departure arrangements may change seasonally and use of the quay may vary.
Heit Åkrafjorden Sauna offers a sauna experience in Fjæra with views of the fjord and mountains. Private sessions last two hours each. Check availability before your trip.
Routes and activities in Fjæra
The marked Hylling route is 4.5 kilometres long, including 1,700 metres of anchored steps and cables. Via Ferrata Kyrkjeveggen has three routes with different difficulty levels. Check the route details before taking part. South of Fjæra, the family-friendly Ingadalen via ferrata route is graded B/C. Conditions there may vary.
Canyoning in the Smielva gorge near Rullestad also starts in Fjæra: from Åkrafjorden Nature, a one-hour hike leads to the top of the gorge. Stall Lundal offers activities with Icelandic horses in Fjæra. Together with the climbing routes, these activities show a range of options: from a guided approach to the gorge to routes of varying difficulty and activities with Icelandic horses.
In the wider destination of Etne
In the wider destination of Etne, Langfoss is located by the Åkrafjord. The waterfall is 612 metres high and lies right beside the E134. There is parking below at the rest area, where the hike begins. The marked trail climbs alongside the waterfall towards Varahaugen and Langfosstølen. It passes through forest and rocky terrain close to the roaring water; viewpoints offer views of the Åkrafjord and the surrounding mountain scenery. Several sections are steep.
Etne also offers routes with different profiles: Osnes rundt is a family-friendly circular route close to the centre, covering 5.8 kilometres on hilly gravel and asphalt paths. It can be done on foot, with a pram or by bicycle. Vaula via Langfoss, by contrast, is a challenging hike of about 9 kilometres with almost 900 metres of elevation gain; it normally takes around five hours.
Cultural attractions in Etne include Stødle kyrkje and Sæbøtunet. In the 12th century, the oldest part of the church served as the family chapel of Erling Skakke and his family. Sæbøtunet is the largest authentic historic farm complex from the 18th and 19th centuries in Sunnhordland. The Etnemarknaden, which began in 1981, offers three days of cultural and family experiences in early August, with activities, concerts and 150 exhibitors. Check the current dates and whether the event is taking place before your trip.
