Discover Kleppestø: Hiking and Cultural History
Accommodation in Kleppestø
Kleppestø offers two clear starting points for a trip focused on hiking and culture: the Askøy på langs route and the cultural and historical sights around KIPO Kultursal and the quay.
Hiking from Kleppestø
The Askøy på langs route starts in Kleppestø and heads north to Herdla. You can choose between a 37.3-kilometre option and a 16-kilometre option. Both pass through varied terrain, dense forests and open coastal landscapes. The different distances give you a concrete comparison of the amount of walking, while both options cover the same types of scenery.
Culture and history in the area
KIPO Kultursal has 339 seats and professional sound and lighting equipment. It is intended for larger concerts, performances, courses and conferences.
The 2021–2025 cultural plan lists the ferry quay in Kleppestø as still in operation and as a cultural monument. The distinctive roundhouse at Kleppestøkaien was designed by the architects Trumpy and Wiberg; the cultural plan describes it as largely unchanged. From 1970, Rutelaget A-B used the building as its administrative offices. Another historic chapter began in 1955: the MF Kleppestø served the Kleppestø–Nøstet route as a passenger and car ferry.
Getting around the area
The nearest stop to KIPO Kultursal is Kleppestø ungdomsskole. Askøy folkebibliotek library is on the second floor of Kleppestø senter.
More things to see and do in the wider destination of Askøy
In the wider destination of Askøy, Herdla and Siglingabu offer further nature and leisure activities. Birdwatching is possible on Herdla; more than 240 bird species have been recorded there over time. Access is prohibited in parts of Herdla Nature Reserve and in the seabird reserves from 15 April to 30 September. Before visiting, check the signs and applicable local rules. Herdla Golf is an easygoing nine-hole coastal course with sea views from every hole; disc golf is also available on Herdla.
Siglingabu is in a landscaped recreation area in the eastern part of Askøy. The path from the car park by Siglingavatnet to the cabin is 1.2 kilometres long, runs entirely along a gravel path and is designed to be accessible to all. Canoes can be rented at Siglingavatnet outdoor recreation park, which also has a floodlit ski trail. At Siglingabu, you can go boating or canoeing, fish and swim.
Events are also part of the leisure offering in the wider destination of Askøy: Askøy Rundt is an annual sailing regatta, and the Askøy Padlefestival takes place on Askøy every year. Check event dates to see what is on during your trip.
