Discover Folldal: Mining History and Trails
Accommodation in Folldal
Folldal combines the mining heritage of Folldal Gruver with the Helsestien trail and the Rondane National Tourist Route. Depending on whether you are interested in mining history, a trail with views of Rondane, or a road route, you can focus your stay in different ways.
Mining History at Folldal Gruver
Folldal Gruver is a working museum with around 70 buildings, mine tunnels, slag heaps, and spoil heaps. The site showcases different traces of mining in one place: visitors can walk through the socially stratified mining community of the 20th century, follow the production route from the cableway station to the loading area, and see mining relics from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The visitor experience also includes a train ride through Stoll 1. It complements the trails through the mining area with a journey underground. If this ride is essential to your day’s plans, check the latest information in advance. Folldal Gruver is also designated as a rest area and viewpoint on the Rondane National Tourist Route.
Helsestien and Views of Rondane
The Helsestien trail starts at Folldal Gruver and is 2.9 kilometers long. The trail is suitable for wheelchair users and strollers. This makes it easy to distinguish when planning from the trails that lead through the mining history: here, the route and the views take center stage.
At the upper end of the Helsestien trail, there is a shelter as well as tables and benches for a break. From there, you can enjoy a lovely view of Rondane. Information about the trail’s length, accessibility, and facilities for a break helps you consider the Helsestien as a specific excursion, without confusing it with the longer road routes.
Road Routes Around Folldal
The Rondane National Tourist Route runs between Folldal and Venabygdsfjellet and is open to traffic year-round. Temporary weather-related closures may occur separately, so check the latest traffic information before setting off. Another named connection is the Tour de Dovre. From Folldal, it follows the paved National Tourist Route, or County Road 27, onward to Grimsdalsvegen and Grimsdalshytta. These route details give you different reference points for planning: the connection between Folldal and Venabygdsfjellet on the one hand, and the continuation toward Grimsdalsvegen and Grimsdalshytta on the other.
