Three specific attractions can help guide a trip to Gjesåsen: Gjesåsen Church, the Gjesåsbergrunden cycling route that passes by it, and the climbing park next to the church. This gives you a choice of cultural history, cycling, and activities for children and adults. If you are looking for hotels, you can consider which of these interests you would like to shape your stay.

Church, Lake and History

Gjesåsen Church is located nine kilometres north of Flisa, on the eastern shore of Lake Gjesåssjøen. The wooden long church was built in 1863. It was restored in 1945 and 1954; the 1954 restoration also included an expansion of the cemetery. These dates provide a timeline for the church’s construction and subsequent changes.

A memorial stone to the so-called “Tater King Stor-Johan” was unveiled in the cemetery. The Gjesåsbergrunden also has a rest area by the church, with a beautiful view of the lake and church. Historical themes and a specific viewpoint come together here in the same place.

Gjesåsbergrunden and Climbing Park

The Gjesåsbergrunden is a signposted, 28-kilometre cycling route in Åsnes that passes Gjesåsen Church. It is also described as an easy loop through a cultural landscape and over Gjesåsberget. Both its length and the stated character of the landscape can help you decide whether the route is right for you.

Gjesåsen Climbing Park is next to the church and offers elevated adventures for children and adults. Children can play there with pedal tractors and stilts. Animals graze beside the park. The climbing activities and play options mentioned here offer different ways for children and adults to enjoy a stay.

Åsnes as the Wider Setting

Beyond Gjesåsen, Åsnes is characterised by attractive cultural landscapes and extensive forest areas; the Glomma divides the area down the middle. Åsnes has around 259 kilometres of hiking trails through forests and open terrain. This gives an idea of the landscape diversity of the wider destination, without equating the hiking trails with the Gjesåsbergrunden.

Finnskogleden is a marked, 240-kilometre hiking trail. It runs north from Morokulien in Eidskog through Åsnes to Søre Osen in the municipality of Trysil, follows old transport routes, and offers nature experiences as well as insights into the old Finnish culture. If you are planning this route, check the current trail conditions before setting out. Åsnes also has twelve marked summit hiking routes; the number may change in later seasons. So check the current seasonal information before heading out.
