Events and getting around
Midnattsrocken began as a music festival in Lakselv’s local community hall. The festival site was later moved to a particularly scenic area near the Brennelvneset nature reserve, about 3 km from the centre of Lakselv. If a festival visit is part of your plans, check the event date and location against the latest information.
Lakselv Airport, Banak, is at 9700 Lakselv. To reach the North Cape Golf Club course, drive in the direction of the airport from Lakselv; as the course’s operations may change, check in advance. These points of reference add two more things to consider when planning your trip alongside the cultural events.
Porsanger: Landscapes and trails in the region
In the wider Porsanger destination, the focus is on waterscapes and winter trails: Porsanger has more than 4,000 fish-rich lakes and three salmon-bearing rivers. It also has 648 kilometres of snowmobile trails, which can be used for fishing or recreation in winter. Stabbursdalen National Park lies mostly within the municipality of Porsanger; a small corner in the northwest belongs to the municipality of Kvalsund. The park’s protected features include the world’s northernmost pine forest, various water systems, the Gáissene mountain formation, geological deposits and cultural heritage sites.
Stabbursdalen National Park has hiking trails as well as open cabins and gammes for simple outdoor activities. If you plan to use these facilities, check their current condition in advance. For birdwatching, Stabbursnes Nature Reserve offers a particular point of interest: it includes one of Norway’s largest continuous shallow-water areas and is one of the country’s most important wetlands for birds. On the south side of the Stabbursneset peninsula is a birdwatching station overlooking the Valda marsh; it is open from spring to autumn. Valdakmyra is considered the only place in Europe where lesser white-fronted geese can be easily observed during their spring migration. Check seasonal birdwatching conditions before travelling.
