The Snefjord rest area and viewpoint are located where the Snefjordelva flows into the Snefjorden. The beach is close to the rest area. This makes the spot both a clearly defined landscape feature and a place to stop on the Havøysund National Scenic Route. The seating boxes and Sámi cultural landscape are other defining features of the area; hiking and salmon fishing are also options to consider when planning your trip.

Snefjord on the Havøysund National Scenic Route

The Snefjord rest area is one of three facilities along the 66-kilometre National Scenic Route on the RV889 between Kokelv and Havøysund. Snefjord is one of the route’s rest area and viewpoint stops. If you include this stretch in your trip plans, you can consider it a specific stop on the route between the two places mentioned. At the rest area itself, the point where the Snefjordelva flows into the Snefjorden is the immediate landscape feature.

Seating with different views

The rest area has a parking lot and seating in three cube-shaped boxes. Each box stands on short steel supports above the ground, is open on two sides and has an integrated bench. The bench is part of each box, and the open sides face outward. The arrangement of the boxes also shapes the experience: when looking towards the sea, visitors cannot see one another, while there is more visual contact on the landward side. The facility thus offers different views depending on whether you look towards the sea or inland.

Sámi cultural landscape and salmon fishing

Snefjord is a Sámi coastal community with small farms scattered across the cultural landscape. Traditionally, the area has been shaped by the combination of farming and fishing. In summer, Sámi reindeer herds are in the area around Snefjord. The farms and this combination of agriculture and fishing give the coastal landscape a cultural context alongside its setting by the water. The rest area and viewpoint at the mouth of the Snefjordelva, where it flows into the Snefjorden, offer good conditions for salmon fishing. If you plan to fish, check the local rules and the current season in advance.

Long hikes and cycling in the area

The area around Snefjord is ideal for long hikes along the Snefjordvassdraget. Long hikes are also possible in Krokelvdalen. The two areas offer different landscape settings: the course of the waterway in one, the valley in the other. When choosing a longer hike, you can consider which of these landscapes interests you most.

Near Snefjord, the Havøysund National Scenic Route can be combined with National Cycle Route 1; it also runs along EuroVelo 1 (Atlantic Coast Route). However, this section is not signposted as a cycle route. If you are considering these route connections for a cycling trip, check the current signage and road conditions in advance.
