Sørvær is a traditional fishing village spread across three small, barren skerries. For generations, much of its population has depended on the sea for its livelihood. The landscape and way of life give the place a distinctly maritime character. Several distinct themes can therefore shape your trip planning: the fishing village itself, church architecture, historical traces, and protected nature. You can choose your accommodation based on the interests that matter to you during your stay.

Church and Stained-Glass Windows

Sørvær Church is worth a visit for its distinctive architecture and beautiful interior. Built of wood and stone in 1968, it is a long church with around 90 seats. Sverre Flåto was its architect. On Christmas Eve 2001, three stained-glass windows created by Maria Steen were unveiled in the church. The building, its materials, and the artworks offer different points of interest if you are interested in sacred architecture or interior decoration. If you would like to see the church inside, check visiting arrangements in advance.

Fishing History in Houses and Language

Local history is also reflected in buildings and language. After the war, eleven houses known as Hamar houses were built in Sørvær. The Sørvær dialect differs from the dialects spoken in the other places on Sørøya and is influenced by Nord-Troms. This is attributed to the once-large skrei fishery and the arrival of fishermen from the south. Fishing history and cultural distinctiveness thus emerge in two different forms: postwar buildings and language.

Andotten Nature Reserve

Andotten Nature Reserve lies near Sørvær. It was designated a protected area on January 28, 1983. The reserve protects an important seabird nesting area, along with its associated plant communities and the birdlife and other wildlife that depend on them. From the mountain plateau in the nature reserve, you can enjoy an impressive view of Sørvær and the surrounding areas.

Stone Age Traces in the Area

Unlike the single Sørvær Church, several Stone Age settlement sites lie nearby, each showing different traces. At Sarset, between Breivikbotn and Sørvær, there is a clearly visible settlement site, 50 metres behind the cabin that stands there. In Sandvika, also between Breivikbotn and Sørvær, distinct beach ridges, known as Tapes ridges, are visible. At the Stone Age settlement site in Årvik, between Breivikbotn and Sørvær, a beach ridge runs across the entire valley; a total of 18 hut remains are associated with it. If you include these sites in your plans, check local conditions and access on site.

Hiking and Fishing Trips

In 2025, the Perletur program included the Sandfjordskaret route in Sørvær. Check seasonal route offerings again before your trip. Sørøya Havfiskecruise offers fishing trips and other nature experiences from its main base in Sørvær, from April 1 until the end of September. Check the operator’s current operating dates before making plans.
