Hammerfest can be explored from several perspectives: the town is surrounded by mountains, sandy beaches and coastal scenery; at the same time, surveying history, photography and the views from Salen shape what visitors can do. If you’re looking for a hotel in Hammerfest, these different themes can guide your plans. Consider which aspects you’d especially like to explore during your stay.

Culture, surveying and photography

On Fuglenes in Hammerfest, the Meridianstøtten marks the northernmost survey point and was one of 13 locations for astronomical observations. The monument is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. For insights into cultural history, the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society in Hammerfest also offers an exhibition on Arctic hunting, wildlife and polar expeditions.

The Hammerfest Library has a permanent exhibition of 34 photographs by Kåre Kivijärvi; information about the exhibition is available in Norwegian and English. Kivijärvi (1938–1991) was a Kven artist from Hammerfest and is considered Norway’s first art photographer and a pioneer in his field. The collection offers a distinctive way to explore photography and the town’s cultural history. The Arctic Culture Centre also has a cinema. Check the current programme before your trip.

Salen: views and trails

From Mount Salen, you can see all of Hammerfest town centre. Gammelveien is a circular route around Salen, about 4 km long, and includes remains from the Second World War. Its approximate length and circular route make it easier to fit this trail into your day’s plans.

Sikksakkveien is a gravel path with steps leading up Salen. At the top are a viewpoint and the Turistua Lodge, which has a café or restaurant; offerings may change, so check what is currently available before your visit. You can reach the viewpoint on foot via the Zigzag road from central Hammerfest, or by car via Idrettsveien and Turistveien. Road conditions can vary seasonally; check them before driving.
