Gamvik between Fishing Village and Tundra
Accommodation in Gamvik
Gamvik is a fishing village whose natural surroundings remain largely untouched by modern tourism. The subarctic tundra landscape defines the area. County Road 888 connects Gamvik, Mehamn and Lebesby, at the foot of the Nordkinn Peninsula, to the E6. When searching for a hotel in Gamvik, it helps to make a simple distinction: the village itself centers on its fishing-village character and history, while nature and culture are among the themes in the surrounding area.
Tundra, Birdlife and Slettnes Lighthouse
Gamvik lies in the subarctic zone and features a tundra landscape. Nearby, Slettnes Nature Reserve is home to more than 150 bird species. The landscape and birdlife offer a different focus from the history found in the village. At Slettnes Lighthouse, this natural setting meets a striking structure. The tower is 39 meters high, and 139 steps lead to the top. From there, the view stretches across the sea and the natural surroundings of the reserve. Slettnes Lighthouse is also the only cast-iron lighthouse tower in Finnmark. Its height, number of steps and construction give the lighthouse distinctive architectural features. Slettnes Lighthouse, mainland Norway’s northernmost lighthouse, is located near Gamvik.
Fishing History and Cultural Sites
The Gamvik Museum is housed in the former Brodtkorbbruket fish warehouse. The building is one of the few well-preserved fish factories from the postwar reconstruction period in Finnmark. Slettnes Lighthouse offers a different perspective on history: after three years of construction, it began operating on September 15, 1905; in 1998, it was designated a cultural heritage site. Archaeological finds from the Stone Age were discovered in Gamvik’s town center and date to approximately 8000 to 5000 BC. Those interested in different historical periods can compare the finds in the center with the history of the museum building and the lighthouse’s construction and preservation history.
On the way to Slettnes, the remains of a German coastal fort from the Second World War include bunkers, trenches and gun emplacements. Near Elvegård, on the road to Slettnes, there is an outdoor exhibition by Reijo Kelo. These two sites add further cultural and historical themes in the surrounding area to the stories of the museum and lighthouse.
