Solbergmoen: Nature, Sport and History
Accommodation in Solbergmoen
When looking for a hotel in Solbergmoen, it is worth first considering the local attractions: nature, sport and local history all come together in the surrounding area. Specific points of interest range from a seasonally groomed cross-country ski trail to the early industrial history of the spinning mill. Knowing the differences can help you plan activities and choose your travel dates more effectively.
Loops, Ski Trails and Hiking Destinations
The “Marivann rundt” loop runs nearby. It is about 6 km long and has a track for classic cross-country skiing; skating is also possible. The loop is suitable for families with children and older people. Grooming is seasonal. If you plan to cross-country ski there, check the current condition of the trail in advance. From Solbergelva, the loop is accessible via Nerdamsveien, which is open to vehicles year-round. From the Damhaugen parking area, a groomed ski trail runs along Nerdammen.
Another option in the area is the DNT hiking route to Kampenhaug. It starts at the Damhaugen parking area, which is accessible from Solbergelva via Nerdamsveien. From the parking area, it is 3 km to Kampenhaug. The two distance figures describe different things: for Marivann, the distance refers to the length of a loop, while for Kampenhaug, it is the distance from the starting point to the destination. This is useful when comparing routes based on their stated lengths.
Damslett also offers a specific point of access to the water. The cabin is on the eastern shore of Nerdammen in Solbergelva, in Drammen municipality. From Damslett, swimming in Nerdammen is possible directly below the cabin; swimming is seasonal. This means the waterside options differ: the Marivann loop focuses on the route and ski trail, while Damslett offers seasonal swimming.
Views and Sporting Destinations
The Knabben viewpoint is located in Solbergelva and is popular. The climb up to it is steep. If you are considering Knabben for an outing, take this trail condition into account when planning. This way, you can consider the viewpoint as an activity in its own right, rather than choosing it solely for its name or its views.
Solbergbanen adds sport and ice skating to the outdoor activities. The facility is located in Solbergelva and is used extensively for bandy; it is also used by ice-skating enthusiasts of all ages. It has changing rooms, a kiosk and public toilets. Bandy and ice skating are therefore distinct activities available at the same location.
Industrial and Military History
Solberg Spinderi offers another way to explore the area’s history. The spinning mill was founded in 1818 as Drammen Bomuldsspinneri and is Norway’s oldest mechanically operated spinning mill. In 1821, it moved its operations from Drammen to Solbergelva to make use of hydropower. Its founding and relocation were two separate milestones, three years apart. The old factory site is registered as a heritage site worthy of preservation. This makes it possible to understand the area’s industrial history both through the development of the business and through the site’s preservation status.
Gjetholbatteriet, also known as Batteriet, is part of the area’s military history. The fortification is located between Stenseth and Solbergelva. It was built from 1898 to 1903 as one of several border fortifications in the Drammensdalen valley. Its historical focus is therefore quite different from that of the spinning mill: here, the focus is on border fortifications, while the mill is associated with mechanical spinning operations and the use of hydropower.
