Discover Sylling: Hørtekollen and Lierbanen
Accommodation in Sylling
Sylling offers several starting points for a stay: the Hørtekollen viewpoint, Lierbanen as a cycling and hiking trail, historic local features, and a swimming and recreation area by the Holsfjorden. You can tailor your stay to the things that interest you in Sylling.
Viewpoint and Lierbanen
The Hørtekollen viewpoint is in Sylling and can be visited in both summer and winter. This makes it a year-round point of interest when planning your trip.
Lierbanen is an approximately 21-kilometre cycling route from Lierbyen to Svangstrand in Sylling. It is also a hiking and cycling trail that passes through a beautiful cultural landscape. Information boards along the route tell the history of Lierbanen; the trail is signposted as far as Svangstrand. The signs help with navigation, while the boards provide historical context for the route.
Its history offers another perspective: Lierbanen opened on 12 July 1904 and ran from Lier to Svangstrand in Sylling. As a cycling route, however, it is listed as starting in Lierbyen. These different starting points help distinguish the historic railway route from the cycling route.
Local history and time by the Holsfjorden
Sylling Church is a stone church dating from 1852. It adds an architectural aspect to the area's history, making it a different topic from the history of Lierbanen. Those interested in both will find in Sylling a specific church building and a historic route to explore.
A short path leads from Sylling sports park to the Holsfjorden and a swimming and recreation area. There is a sand volleyball court, a swimming raft and a barbecue area. The waterfront offers different activities from the route and viewpoint: swimming, volleyball and barbecuing are the main attractions here.
Road access and Lier as a regional context
County Road 285 passes through Sylling and runs between Skaret on the E16 and Kjellstad on the E18.
The wider destination of Lier offers a distinct landscape setting. Finnemarka is one of Lier's three large forest areas and is part of the municipality's extensive network of trails. The Linnesstranda nature reserve is a brackish-water delta at the mouth of the Lierelva. The river flows through the Lierdalen before emptying into the Drammensfjord at Linnesstranda. These landscape features complement Sylling's local attractions with other natural areas and waterways in the Lier destination. In Lier, Eiksetra serves as a starting point for hikes in Finnemarka in both summer and winter. The pilgrimage route through Lier is part of the route from Tønsberg to Oslo and follows old transport routes, some of which are more modern.
