Krøderen combines railway heritage with opportunities to get active in the village. At the railway station, Krøderbanen and its history take centre stage; Kryllingparken offers a different focus, with a pump track, cycling and play areas. If you are looking for a hotel in Krøderen, these different sides of the village can help you plan your stay around your interests. Other cultural and nature experiences are part of the wider destination of Krødsherad and are described separately here.

Krøderen Railway Station and Krøderbanen

Krøderbanen opened in 1872 as a narrow-gauge railway. It was discontinued as an NSB railway in 1985; since then, Norsk Jernbaneklubb and Stiftelsen Krøderbanen have operated it as a heritage railway. Krøderen Railway Station is protected as a technical heritage site. All the old facilities from the steam locomotive era are located there. The goods shed at the station houses the “For full damp” exhibition. As visitor facilities at the station may change, it is worth checking the latest accessibility information before your visit.

The station park also has an outdoor café and a separate toilet building, which was newly built in 2023. The toilet building may not be available outside operating hours. If you plan to use it, check its current availability.

Kryllingparken and getting your bearings in the village

Kryllingparken is located above Coop and Krøderen School, by Krødsheradhallen. The park is Norway’s largest pump track facility and a place for skating, cycling, scootering, playing and training. These activities give the park a different character from the historic railway station: the focus here is on outdoor activity.

There is a boat ramp in central Krøderen. At the Kørpen pumping station, there are two public toilets, open during the summer season from May to September. Krøderen camping is also among the swimming spots in Krøderen. This information distinguishes specific points of interest in the village from the experiences available across the wider destination of Krødsherad.

Krødsherad as a wider destination

Krødsherad surrounds the southern part of Lake Krøderen and has a shoreline along the lake. Krøderfjorden is 41 kilometres long. The wider destination has several designated swimming spots; fishing, swimming and boating are also possible on Krøderfjorden. These regional opportunities complement the local points of interest in Krøderen without conflating them with experiences in other places.

The MS Kryllingen II offers seasonal cruises on Krøderfjorden. The seasonal programme includes themed cruises about shrimp, wine, knitting and war history, as well as other offerings; the programme may change. If you are planning a cruise, check the dates and the current seasonal programme.

The hiking programme in Krødsherad also provides practical information: it includes 22 hiking destinations with trail registers. The trails are marked in blue; many are also marked with GPS and listed on UT.no. The hike to Kleivavarden starts at Krødsheradhallen.

Another cultural highlight across the wider destination is Villa Fridheim. This well-preserved Swiss-style villa is a fairy-tale museum with a special focus on fairy tales, storytelling and intangible cultural heritage. The museum is primarily dedicated to the life’s work of Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe. Villa Fridheim also offers exhibitions, concerts and events; the programme may change.
