Krokkleiva combines maintained trails and cross-country ski tracks with views of fjords and mountains. For planning your trip, specific questions about places and routes are key: Where does a described circular hike go, how does Kongens utsikt fit in, and where is Kleivstua located? The following route and elevation details help distinguish these reference points.

Trails and access

Maintained trails and cross-country ski tracks lead from Krokkleiva. A circular hike passes through Krokkleiva and Nordkleiva, by Tavleskardet, and reaches Kleivstua. It can include Kongens utsikt; the return route goes via Krokkleiva to the starting point. The route links several named locations and returns to the start.

The entire road between Sundvollen and Kleivstua is paved; cars can use it for a toll. Check current access conditions and toll arrangements before setting out.

Views of fjords and mountains

The panorama from Krokkleiva and Kongens utsikt offers views of fjords and mountains. Nearby is Dronningens utsikt, a viewpoint close to the old cable car station and about 300 metres northeast of Kleivstua. From there, you can see Tyrifjorden, with its wooded islands and islets, as well as fertile cultural landscapes. In the distance are Vikerfjell, Norefjell and Blefjell. Vegetation has partly obstructed the view.

Kleivstua as a landmark

Kleivstua is a conference hotel in the municipality of Hole in Buskerud county. It stands at the top of Krokkleiva in Krokskogen, 383 metres above sea level and just over a kilometre from Kongens utsikt. The viewpoint is a half-hour walk from Kleivstua. The distance and walking time describe different aspects of the connection.

Transport history also provides context for Kleivstua: After the road over Sollihøgda was completed around 1860, the horse-changing station at Øvre Jonsrud became redundant and closed shortly afterwards. Kleivstua continued to operate as a tourist hotel. The two places therefore followed different paths after the road was built: Øvre Jonsrud ceased to serve as a horse-changing station, while Kleivstua continued as a tourist hotel.

Cultural and natural highlights in Hole

The Gudbrandsdalsleden passes through the wider destination of Hole. It is a section of the pilgrimage route to Nidaros, present-day Trondheim. Marked pilgrimage trails connect, among other things, natural and cultural heritage sites associated with the Middle Ages and the Olav tradition. This offers a distinct regional perspective on nature and cultural history.

Another option in the wider destination of Hole is an 8-kilometre cycling loop around Steinsfjorden, which is shared by Hole and Ringerike. The route follows paved footpaths and cycle paths and quiet country roads throughout. There are places to swim and fish along the loop; Steinsfjorden is home to large pike.

Cultural destinations in the wider destination of Hole also include Bønsnes Church. It is located at Bønsnes, at the far end of the Røyse peninsula, and is one of Norway’s oldest medieval churches. Inside is a wooden Madonna sculpture dating from around 1250.
