Eggjareir: Hiking and ski touring in the surrounding area
Accommodation in Eggjareir
When looking for a hotel in Eggjareir, it is worth considering the different scales of the surrounding area. Raggsteindalen is nearby, while other cabins, trails and activities are spread throughout the region. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between hiking and ski touring opportunities in the nearby valley and destinations farther afield.
Raggsteindalen: scenery and tours in the nearby area
Raggsteindalen stretches from Strandavatn in Hol, at an altitude of 1,000 metres, towards Hallingskarvet. The valley extends from the birch forest belt to the treeless mountains. Its highest point, Folarskardnuten, is 1,933 metres high. The landscape therefore combines wooded highlands with open high mountains.
Raggsteindalen offers good opportunities for ski touring, and there are no disruptive alpine ski slopes. The valley also offers a variety of options for mountain hiking. Several DNT-marked hiking trails start from Raggsteindalen Høyfjellstue. The Høyfjellstue is closed. The road there is not cleared in winter—a key difference to consider when planning, depending on the season.
Storestølen fjellstugu is mentioned as an alternative place to stay while Raggsteindalen Høyfjellstue is closed. Check whether this option is available again before booking. This lets you consider your accommodation plans separately from hiking and ski touring in the valley.
Hiking destinations and trails in the wider region
Lordehytta is a stone cabin built around 1880 in Folarskaret on Hallingskarvet. It can only be reached on foot. The approach takes about five hours from Haugastøl or about three hours from Raggsteindalen. The two stated starting points therefore also differ in their approximate walking times.
Another hiking option is Lordemarsjen, an event organized annually in early August. The 21-kilometre route runs from Raggsteindalen through Folarskaret to Haugastøl Turistsenter; it can also be walked independently. If you are planning to join the organized hike, check the dates and arrangements for that year.
Storestølen offers boat transport across Strandavatnet to a locally marked trail in Ynglesdalen. This trail leads to Geiterygghytta and Raggsteindalen. The boat service combines getting around the region by water with a marked trail to the destinations listed. Check the timetable before planning your trip.
Geiterygghytta is located at an altitude of 1,224 metres in the heart of Skarvheimen and has 88 beds. In summer, the cabin rents out canoes and fishing rods. In winter, it rents out snowshoes and sleds for the toboggan runs around the cabin. Ask about current availability for your travel dates.
Hol and Hallingskarvet National Park
Part of Hallingskarvet National Park lies within the wider travel area of Hol. Established in 2006, the national park covers 450 square kilometres and includes the Hallingskarvet plateau and adjoining high-mountain areas to the west. It spans three municipalities in two counties: Hol in Buskerud, and Ulvik and Aurland in Vestland. Hallingskarvet has steep slopes to the north and south.
Possible starting points for access to the national park are Haugastøl on National Road 7 or Storestølen Fjellhotell on Road 50. A longer hike or ski tour is required from either location. Bear this in mind when comparing activities in the wider travel area of Hol with the hiking and ski touring opportunities closer to Raggsteindalen.
