When planning your stay in Flesberg, there are several questions to consider: are you mainly interested in architectural history, waterside scenery or leisure activities? Flesberg Stave Church, the banks of the Numedalslågen near Haugen and the facilities at Haugen Activity Park offer concrete points of reference. If you are looking for hotels in Flesberg, you can decide how to prioritise these themes based on what matters to you on your trip.

Flesberg Stave Church and scenery

Flesberg Stave Church stands on the edge of the settlement centre. It is dated to the second half of the 12th century or the first half of the 13th century. Originally, the church had three naves; in 1735 it was converted into a cruciform church. Part of the medieval west portal has been preserved. Its architectural history therefore shows several clearly distinguishable phases, from the original structure to the 18th-century conversion.

The landscape around the church is also distinctively described: the valley floor there is flat and broad, with cultivated land and pine forests shaping the surroundings. At the church, architectural history and an open cultural landscape sit side by side.

Haugen Activity Park on the Numedalslågen

Near the Haugen farm in Flesberg, a recreational area with a large sandy beach lies along the Numedalslågen. Conditions by the water vary by season. To reach Haugen Activity Park, take the turnoff from the Fv40 by Flesberg Stave Church. A large car park and a gravel path lead to the beach. As road and parking conditions may change, check the current access arrangements before your visit.

Facilities at Haugen Activity Park include a playground and a sand volleyball court. The park also includes historic buildings: a storehouse from Søre Førlie and the Juvenes schoolroom. This lets you combine different interests during a visit, from outdoor activities to the park’s historic buildings. Facilities may change; check what is currently available before your visit.

More options in the wider region

Across the wider region, the Flesberg destination offers more places for a range of activities. Stevningsmogen has lit ski trails of 1, 2, 3 and 6 kilometres, as well as a toboggan slope and a ski play area. The four lengths give you a specific choice of distance. On the same site, you can combine a ski tour with a swim and a sauna session at the swimming pool; the availability of these facilities may vary by season.

At Vatnebrynvatnet there is a recreational area that is universally accessible and has a child-friendly sandy beach. A rowing boat, two canoes and two kayaks are available for hire there. Check the boats’ current availability locally. The beach and the boats offer two different ways to enjoy the waterside area.

Fagerfjell is another starting point for activities in the Flesberg destination. The car park at the ski centre and campsite serves as a starting point for ski tours. From Fagerfjell, head towards Sandtjenn and Strutåsen to continue into the Søre Blefjell trail network. For cyclists, the Blefjell route from north to south is signposted from both Fagerfjell and Gvelven; motorised traffic is not permitted on the route. This easy, well-maintained route is about 16 kilometres long out and back and runs between Fagerfjell and Gvelven kro. Check current route conditions in advance.

The region’s history extends beyond the stave church: the Vinoren silver mines west of Svene were in operation until 1956. For orientation along the wider route, Provincial Road 40 runs through Flesberg from Larvik via Kongsberg to Geilo.
