Torpo: Stave Church, Folk Culture and Outdoor Activities
Accommodation in Torpo
Torpo brings together a distinctive stave church, folk music and folk dancing at Hugnadheim, and opportunities for hiking, skiing and cycling. When choosing a destination, these themes can offer different points of focus: the churches represent different building phases and uses, Hugnadheim represents cultural life in Hallingdal, and outdoor activities offer another side of the area.
The stave church and its history
Torpo stave church was probably built around the middle of the 12th century and is the only stave church in Hallingdal. Its decorated canopy depicts Christ, the apostles and the legend of Saint Margaret. These images add a narrative dimension to the building itself.
The nave is all that remains of the original building; the chancel and apse were demolished in 1880. That same year, Torpo Church was built to replace the old stave church, which had become too small and impractical over time as a parish church. The two buildings stand right next to each other, and many visitors see them on the same tour. This makes it possible to follow the transition from the preserved stave church to the later church building across two neighbouring buildings. In the 1920s, Torpo Church acquired its distinctive stained-glass windows depicting the Evangelists.
Regular services are held at Torpo Church throughout the year, along with concerts and cultural events. It is also used for baptisms, weddings, confirmations and funerals. Its uses range from regular services and events to personal celebrations.
Folk music and folk dancing at Hugnadheim
Hugnadheim is the village hall in Torpo and a centre for folk music and folk dancing in Hallingdal. Almost every day throughout the year, people from across Hallingdal gather there for folk dancing and folk music. Hugnadheim therefore has both a local role as a village hall and regional cultural significance.
If you would like to consider Torpo’s cultural life as well as its churches, Hugnadheim offers a focus of its own. Music and dance take centre stage here, while the churches reflect different building phases and religious as well as cultural uses. These themes offer different perspectives without reducing a visit to just one area of interest.
Hiking, trail biking and skiing
Torpo offers countless opportunities for hiking, skiing and cycling. There are many attractive areas for hiking, and Torpo is one of the finest trail-biking destinations in Hallingdal. If trail biking is your main interest, this particular distinction is relevant; hiking and skiing are also among the available activities.
In the centre of Torpo, the Bakketun sports ground has a football pitch and a floodlit ski stadium. Alongside the wide-ranging opportunities for hiking and cycling, there is also a specific sports facility in the area. The activities described range from hiking areas and trail biking to the facilities at Bakketun. This can help you weigh up church and cultural history against different outdoor activities when planning your trip.
