Evje offers travelers a range of ways to spend their time in the area: bowling in town, trails in Furuly outdoor recreation park, and hiking and history in the surrounding area.

Bowling and other activities in Evje

Evje Bowling has five bowling lanes, all with bumpers for children. It also offers billiards and air hockey, giving you two other indoor activities to choose from in addition to bowling.

Evje Bowling also offers bowling birthday parties. Bumpers can be set up along the lanes, and shoes and balls for small children are available. These are specific offerings from the bowling venue that distinguish them from a regular visit for bowling.

Walking trails and swimming area by the Otra River

Furuly outdoor recreation park has maintained walking and loop trails suitable for everyone. The trails connect the park with the center of Evje. The park, by the Otra River, also has a sandy beach and a swimming area. This means you can enjoy either a walk or time by the water in the same park.

Hiking trails and scenery in the surrounding area

The Dansarberga circular route is 6.5 kilometers long and leads to a plateau as large as a dance floor. Several viewpoints are located along the route. The name also reflects the place’s recorded history: Dansarberga was originally a meeting place where young people gathered to dance. Sturdy athletic shoes or hiking boots are recommended for the trail; it can be slippery.

The Mykleåsen trail offers different scenery: it runs through wooded terrain in a traditional mining and mineral area and provides views of Evje and the Otra River. The Dansarberga circular route has a specified length, while the Mykleåsen trail is described in terms of its forest, mining history and views.

The Evje floodlit trail is illuminated from October to April. Those interested in mining history can also visit Evje mineralsti in the surrounding area: this walking trail connects five old mines in a cultural and historical landscape. Equipment can be borrowed; a helmet and safety glasses are required on the trail.

Mining history and getting your bearings locally

At the Flåt mining area, visitors can scan QR codes to access information about the history of each site. The workings of the Flåt nickel mine have since filled with water, but their history can still be explored. The Dansarberga circular route, the Mykleåsen trail and Evje mineralsti each have a different focus: views and dance history, woodland in a mining region, or a walk to five old mines.

The trail to the Gruveblikk day cabin in Flatebygd is suitable for electric wheelchairs. The slope is too steep for manual wheelchairs, and the trail is not cleared in winter. From Gruveblikk, you can enjoy views of the Otra River and parts of Evje. These specific conditions are important to consider when planning to take the trail.

Museum and regional history

The Evjemoen Forsvarsmuseum opened in 2006 and is located south of Evje town center. It explores the development of Evjemoen and the changes in the military in times of war and peace. One exhibition is dedicated to the life and work of Jørgen Løvland, who was a member of parliament and prime minister. It is the only army museum between Bergen and Oslo.

The museum’s listed seasonal opening hours are from June 23 through August 9, from 10:00 to 16:00; check these hours before traveling. Along with the trails and mining sites, the museum offers another way to learn about the area’s history, with a focus on military history rather than landscape or mining.
