Herefoss between hiking trails and fjord
In Herefoss, hiking trails, waterside spots and evidence of local history cater to a range of travel interests. The Kolåsbu day-trip cabin, swimming spots and the Fløtermuseet offer practical points of reference for planning your trip. When looking for hotels, you can consider whether you’d mainly like to go hiking, spend time by the water or explore the area’s history.
Hiking trails around Herefoss
The KolĂĄsbu day-trip cabin lies just below KolĂĄsen and offers views over the Herefossfjorden and the settlement of Herefoss. It opened in 2022 and can be reached by several hiking trails. From Hanefossbrua, the route is about 0.7 kilometres long. A circular route over KolĂĄsen and the Hanefossdemningen is about 2.2 kilometres long. These figures describe both a shorter route and a longer circular walk.
Herefoss IL maintains several marked hiking trails, some in collaboration with Birkenes municipality. Hiking trails start at the school at the Herefoss sports grounds. Since 2024, a public toilet facility has also been available there. For a different kind of outdoor activity, the illuminated Herefoss lysløype is worth considering: the trail is 1,250 metres long, starts at Herefoss School and runs through gently sloping terrain.
Swimming spots and activities by the water
In Kirkekilen, right by the old centre of Herefoss, there is a landscaped swimming beach with a sand volleyball court, bathing jetty and diving tower. Another swimming spot is Tjøstolvs Brygge on the Herefossfjorden. It is 300 metres from the shop in the direction of Hanefossen. There you’ll find a small sandy beach and a shelter that is free to use, with barbecue facilities.
Fishing is also an option in the area around the destination: the Tovdalselva is a salmon river as far as the Herefossfjorden. The Nedre Tovdal Fiskelag sells a separate fishing permit for this stretch. This makes it possible to combine a stay by the water with different activities, even though they are not all in the same place.
Church, manor house and timber rafting
Herefoss Church was consecrated on 11 October 1865. The octagonal wooden church has a tall tower in the centre. Skrivargarden Nes in Herefoss was once the manor house of the RĂĄbyggelaget judicial district and lies on the western side of the Herefossfjorden.
The Fløtermuseet, with the tugboat Padda, is also located on the Herefossfjorden. The museum presents the history of timber rafting on the Tovdalselva. Padda, originally named Fram II, was used as a log-towing boat on the Herefossfjorden from 1911 to 1955. During its 44 years of service, it transported many millions of logs. The museum and historic boat give the region’s timber-rafting history a tangible connection to Herefoss.
More to explore in the wider destination of Birkenes
Maps and descriptions of hikes throughout the municipality are available to download for the wider destination of Birkenes. The route offerings may be updated, so check the latest version when planning your trip. Another regional attraction is the Birkenes Bygdemuseum: its exhibitions show how transport and industry have shaped the municipality. The collection also includes material about the Lillesand-Flaksvannsbanen and timber rafting. This places the history explored at the Fløtermuseet in Herefoss in the broader context of Birkenes.
