Discover Haslum: Church, Pilgrim Path and Farm History
Accommodation in Haslum
Haslum offers travelers specific points of interest around the medieval Haslum Church, the pilgrim path through Bærum and the historic Haslum Gård farm. The church combines Romanesque architecture with a long building history; the farm offers seasonal raspberry picking.
Haslum Church: Building History and Furnishings
Haslum Church is a whitewashed stone church in the Romanesque style. It was built in the 1190s from locally produced limestone. About 100 years after its construction, it was expanded into its current cruciform shape. This makes it possible to distinguish the original construction period from the later expansion without equating the current form with the first building. A bell dating from 1250 has been preserved in the tower. Haslum Church is one of two medieval churches in the municipality of Bærum.
The church’s surroundings are also part of its character: a cemetery lies on one side, and the apple orchards of Haslum Gård are on the other. The oldest surviving piece of memorabilia from the church is believed to be a round stone with a small hole in the middle. It is said to have formed the base of the first baptismal font. This cautious interpretation is part of the story associated with the piece. The cultural heritage in the destination’s immediate surroundings also includes two Gothic sculptures from the same period as the bell: a Madonna and a bishop statue. Both are now in Universitetets Oldsaksamling, not in Haslum Church.
Pilgrim Path and Seasonal Farm Offerings
The pilgrim path through Bærum runs from Faabro, at the Oslo border, to Haslum Church. The church is therefore a specific point of reference if you are interested in the route and its connection with Haslum. In the wider destination of Bærum, the Gudbrandsdalsleden and Tunsbergleden pilgrim paths also run through the area; they meet just northwest of Øverland.
Haslum Gård is a historic farm with roots stretching far back. It offers seasonal raspberry picking. All visitors who plan to pick their own raspberries must book admission before arrival. The offering depends on the farm’s booking schedule and the harvest. If you would like to include raspberry picking in your travel plans, check the booking schedule and seasonal availability in advance.
Other Highlights in the Wider Destination of Bærum
Beyond Haslum, Bærum offers a range of cultural and scenic attractions. The Henie Onstad Art Centre at Høvikodden is an important institution for international contemporary art; the site is surrounded by a large sculpture park. The Grini Museum tells the history of the Grini prison camp through film footage, photographs, audio recordings, artifacts and digital technology. This means Bærum offers art and museum history as distinct highlights alongside Haslum’s medieval heritage.
For a different kind of trip, the Bærum Coastal Trail is a practical planning option: it is 23 kilometers long and runs from Bjørnsvika to Lysaker. Also in Bærum, the trail to Kolsåstoppen passes through the Kolsås-Dælivann Landscape Protection Area and the Kolsåsstupene Nature Reserve. The regional destinations therefore differ in both theme and distance.
