More than 300 bodies of water, large and small, shape Aurskog-Høland. The region also offers marked hiking trails, cultural sites and diverse natural landscapes. When planning your trip, you can focus on different interests: time outdoors, local history or individual visitor attractions.

Bodies of water, hiking trails and a species-rich landscape

Bodies of water are among the municipality’s defining landscape features. Biodiversity is also high: Aurskog-Høland is home to many different habitat types and species. Hikers will find marked trails and several hiking destinations with cabins and overnight accommodation. Individual routes and cabins may change, so check the latest information before setting out.

Fishing is possible at more than 300 lakes, bodies of water and watercourses. Permits and local rules may vary, so check the regulations for your fishing spot in advance. Hiking and fishing offer two different ways to experience the landscape, without requiring any one type of outing to be the main focus.

Cultural landscape and architectural history

At Mikkelrud, the land has been mown continuously for around 300 years and is rich in species. Today, the site has a main building, a storehouse, a barn and a sheep shed. The long-term care of the land and a group of four distinct building types thus come together as two separate aspects of the cultural landscape.

Aurskog-Høland bygdetun is home to 14 historic buildings. Lectures, concerts, exhibitions and festivals take place there; the program varies. Toverudbautaen offers a different historical perspective: it was erected in 1908 to mark the centenary of the Battle of Toverudsletta. The monument commemorates a specific event, while the bygdetun, with its buildings and events, brings together different forms of cultural life.

Aur Prestegård is a church and vicarage dating from the 19th century, with a history stretching back to the Middle Ages. The site is also part of a pilgrimage route. Mangen Chapel is a log-built long church beside lakes Mangen and Viksjøen. Hiking areas are located near the chapel. Those interested in religious buildings will find two different historical connections here: the long history of Aur Prestegård and the construction style of Mangen Chapel.

Kurøen is an open-air museum and cultural center. Its indoor program is seasonal or tied to events. In Skulerud, the Isbingen Museum displays more than 100 objects from the era of log driving. The cultural offering therefore includes both architectural and local history, as well as a collection devoted to a specific historical subject.

Visitor attractions and regional highlights

Killingmo Alpakka Gård is a visitor farm with alpacas, a donkey and other animals. It is aimed at children and young people and is suitable for all ages. Visits and bookings are by appointment; arrangements may change. Check the latest details in advance.

Skulerud also brings together different visitor interests: the Isbingen Museum focuses on log driving, and Skulerud is a good starting point for a trip along the Halden Canal. Lokstallen Sommerkafe serves local food in summer. As it is a seasonal café, check current opening details before visiting.

You can choose activities based on your interests: monument and architectural history, landscapes and hiking, fishing, or a visit with animals each appeal to different preferences. This can help you decide which themes matter most for your trip without reducing the municipality to just one kind of experience.
