Ulcinj between the Old Town, coast and nature
Accommodation in Ulcinj
Ulcinj combines a rich cultural heritage with coastal landscapes and opportunities for nature observation.
Ulcinj Old Town: Architecture and history
Ulcinj Old Town is listed as a cultural asset of Montenegro and protected by law. It is one of the oldest urban architectural complexes on the Adriatic and has developed over more than 2.5 millennia. Its architecture encompasses Illyrian-Greek, medieval, Venetian and Ottoman layers. This long history is also reflected in its layout: the upper, military-oriented zone is dominated by the citadel, while the civilian lower town lies below.
The Church-Mosque houses the Ulcinj City Museum. Beg’s Tower offers another distinct insight into the town’s architecture and family history: it is the Resulbegović family museum within the Palata Venezia Hotel. The building formerly served as a city palace and as a residence for rulers and princes. Rooms decorated in the Oriental style display authentic antiques and handmade furniture. Sahat Kula was built in 1754 with donations from local residents.
The nearby historic site of Shas also adds to the historical picture. The historic town stands on an 85-metre-high hill north of Lake Shas, with views extending to the lake and the Bojana Delta. The ruins of around ten ancient churches can be found in Shas. Here, architectural evidence in the town meets archaeological traces in the surrounding landscape.
Beaches and protected coastal sites
Small City Beach is 360 metres long and lies below the Old Town. There is a small harbour and a landing stage there. The shallow seabed is considered suitable for children. These details give the beach a clear profile within Ulcinj’s coastal landscape, without reducing the other coastal sites to the same type of beach.
In the vicinity of Ulcinj, Velika Plaža, Ulcinjska Plaža, Valdanos, and the island and beach of Stari Ulcinj are coastal sites registered as natural monuments. Valdanos has a 376-metre-long beach that has been declared a natural monument. A three-kilometre-long sandy beach stretches across Ada Bojana. There are opportunities for water sports, beach volleyball and mini-football; fish restaurants prepare locally caught fish in the traditional way.
The coastal sites differ in the features described for each: in Ulcinj, Small City Beach lies below the Old Town and has a harbour with a landing stage, while Ada Bojana is associated with a long sandy beach and several sports activities. Valdanos, in turn, is described as a coastal and natural monument. If you want to focus your trip primarily on beaches, activities or protected landscapes, these differences provide practical guidance when choosing your destination.
Salt pans, birdwatching and activities
Ulcinj Solana offers a different focus. Visitors can walk between the saltwater pools while observing birds. The salt pans are home to 240 bird species and have birdwatching facilities as well as a museum. A 5.4-kilometre ecological cycling trail leads to a birdwatching tower. In 2004, Solana was declared a private nature park.
The activities on offer also vary by theme. Ulcinj offers conditions for kitesurfing, surfing, diving, hiking, paragliding and mountain biking. At Solana, by contrast, birdwatching, walking around the pools and the cycling trail are connected with nature and the landscape. This lets you plan your stay around your specific interests rather than treating the coast, urban history and nature observation as interchangeable experiences.
