Pljevlja: Cultural Heritage, Urban Greenery and Mountain Landscapes
Accommodation in Pljevlja
Pljevlja brings together historic buildings and collections with urban green spaces and landscapes of mountains, gorges and rivers. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: cultural history, parks or outdoor activities. Pljevlja lies partly within Durmitor National Park. The following distinctions can help you decide how these themes fit into your stay.
Cultural Sites and History
The Monastery of the Holy Trinity is classified as a cultural asset of national importance; this status was confirmed in February 2026. The monastery was built in 1537, while the church took on its present appearance in 1876. The church also preserves the reliquary and hand relic of Saint Sava. For those interested in cultural history, several perspectives come together here: monastic history, architectural history and religious tradition.
The Pljevlja Heritage Museum was founded in 1952 as a complex museum and holds nearly 5,000 objects. Its collections are divided into archaeological, ethnological, historical and cultural-historical departments. They present human life in the Pljevlja area from the Paleolithic period, more than 40,000 years ago, through to later eras; occasional thematic exhibitions are also held. The museum thus offers a broad view across time, while the dates of the buildings mark individual points in history.
The Husein Pasha Mosque stands in the town center. It was built in 1569 to designs by the master builder Hajrudin; its minaret is 42 meters high. The dates provide a clear timeline: the mosque was built after the monastery was established, but before the monastery church took on its present appearance in 1876. This makes it possible to consider different architectural histories side by side, without combining them into a single development.
Green Spaces and Parks
Milet Bašta is in the heart of Pljevlja and is connected to Vodice Park. It is one of the oldest public green spaces in the Balkans. The 12-hectare Vodice Park occupies the former estate of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity. Its features include two artificial lakes and a fishpond; there are also fitness, cycling and walking trails. Water, paths and the historic connection to the former monastery estate give the urban greenery several different aspects.
A restaurant serving national cuisine is located at Milet Bašta. Check before your trip whether it is open on your travel dates. For those who want to include green spaces in their plans alongside historic collections and religious buildings, this offers a different focus within Pljevlja.
Mountain Landscapes and Activities
Ljubišnja is fully marked for hiking and mountain biking. Winter activities on Ljubišnja include snowshoeing and sledding. The season therefore makes a clear difference to the activities available: hiking and mountain biking are complemented by explicitly winter-oriented options. From the summit of Dernjačište on Velika Ljubišnja, there are views of the surrounding mountains and gorges.
The Meanders of the Ćehotina have viewpoints overlooking the winding river. Another nearby attraction is the Đurđevića Tara Bridge. Together, these landscape attractions offer different starting points for a trip that extends beyond the city's buildings and green spaces.
