Grahovo: Memorial, Arboretum and Rural Life
Accommodation in Grahovo
Several themes are relevant when choosing a destination in Grahovo: the memorial, the plant collection at Čeline, and rural activities at Đedovina. Nearby historical and landscape features add to these attractions. PR3A is designated as the “Risan–Grahovo–Nikšić” panoramic road route. When planning, you can weigh up whether memorial sites, plant diversity or a rural setting best match your interests.
Memorial and Historical Sites
The memorial in Grahovo preserves the memory of the Second World War freedom fighters. The complex was designed and built in 1977 and 1978 and consists of three broad terraces. The central feature in the memorial park is a sculptural composition by Miodrag Živković depicting a moving column. The first terrace has four commemorative busts. The memorial park also includes a terrace with 272 cubes. The names of local fighters who fell in the National Liberation Struggle are engraved on the cubes.
By contrast, the nearby Church of St. Nicholas dates from a much earlier period: it was built between 1499 and 1502 and has been protected as a cultural monument since 1957. The area around Grahovo thus offers historical sites with distinctly different time periods.
Arboretum and Landscape
The Kovačević family arboretum in Čeline, Grahovo, includes 127 species of trees, shrubs and woody climbing plants. These include 33 elements of Montenegro’s native flora and 94 introduced species. The arboretum is considered Montenegro’s only botanical garden of this kind to date. As it is a living collection, its inventory may change.
Nearby Grahovsko jezero is a reservoir on the Grahovska River. It is used for agricultural purposes and to irrigate Grahovo Field; this use may vary depending on operating conditions. Water management is therefore the main focus at the lake, while the arboretum is distinguished by its plant collection. These different features offer a practical guide when choosing Grahovo for landscape and nature-related interests.
Rural Life and Activities
Đedovina preserves an authentic setting associated with the lives of ancestors and agricultural production in Grahovo. Activities include hiking, visits to cultural and historical monuments in the village, cycling and farm activities. Local arrangements may be required for activities. The Bulajić family grows fruit and vegetables, including potatoes and corn; agricultural activities may change over time.
A cycling route leads from the center of Grahovo onto a narrow asphalt road that runs for about 4.5 km to Grahovsko jezero. This distance is approximate. Check the road surface and local accessibility before setting out.
The historic site of Grahovac is nearby. It is home to Grahovac 1858, a restaurant serving national cuisine. The menu and opening arrangements may change; check the latest information when planning a specific trip.
