When looking for hotels in Danilovgrad, nature, cultural heritage and activities on the water can each shape your trip in different ways. The Zeta River is central both to the nature park landscape and to guided kayaking tours; Spuž Fortress adds a historic landmark. Before you start your search, consider which of these themes matters most for your stay.

Natural Landscape on the Zeta

The protected nature park along the Zeta River covers 80.8 percent of Danilovgrad municipality. It is recognized for its biodiversity and its natural and cultural-historical values. This brings nature conservation, biological diversity and landscape into focus together. In the wider Danilovgrad destination, the Zeta Valley is considered one of Montenegro’s few fertile valleys and is also known as the Bjelopavlići Plain. This adds another landscape perspective to the description of the protected area.

Spuž Fortress

Spuž Fortress dates from the 18th century and was built as an Ottoman fortress with 24 towers. Its ruins can be explored on foot; from there, the view extends across the Zeta Valley, the surrounding fields and distant mountain ranges. In this way, the history of the structure is paired with views of the valley, fields and mountains. The condition of the ruins and safe access may change. Check the conditions before visiting.

Kayaking on the Zeta

Guided kayaking tours on the Zeta are offered from Zagorak. Options include Class II–III whitewater for experienced paddlers, as well as calm flatwater trips for beginners and families. The two types of tours differ both in the character of the water and in their stated target groups. If you are planning a tour, check its availability and conditions before your trip.

More Landscape and Cultural Heritage Highlights in the Wider Danilovgrad Destination

The mountainous areas of Danilovgrad are rich in forests and considered suitable for tourism. Several historic sites are also part of the wider Danilovgrad destination. Spuž Fortress, including its fortification walls, is listed as protected cultural heritage. The Gradina of Martinići is also listed as protected cultural heritage. It was established in the final decades of the 8th century and the first decades of the 9th century as an early medieval fortified town. Researchers identify it with Porphyrogennetos’s Lontodokla, a center of early medieval Zeta.

The relics of Saint Vasilije of Ostrog there are considered miraculous by Orthodox Christians, Muslims and Catholics. The relics of Saint Arsenije Sremac, regarded as the first successor of Saint Sava, are kept at Ždrebaonik Monastery. The monastery was founded by Vukan, Nemanja’s son, and is located two kilometers from Danilovgrad.
