Several themes come together in Alkiškiai: an Evangelical Lutheran church with a documented construction history, a state forest beside the town, a coin hoard and a water-tour route along the Dabikinė. For planning your trip, these offer different starting points for exploring cultural history, landscape and activities on the water. A municipal bus route also passes through Alkiškiai.

Church and local history

The Evangelical Lutheran church of Alkiškiai, the Alkiškių evangelikų liuteronų bažnyčia, was built starting in 1861 and consecrated in 1865. There was initially a prayer house at the site, serving as a branch of the Šiaulių evangelikų liuteronų bažnyčia. The history of the church site therefore predates the start of construction. The church is also one of three Latvian churches that remained in Lithuania after the Second World War. This brings together two historical layers: the local progression from prayer house to church building and the place of Latvian churches in Lithuania’s postwar history.

The Alkiškių miškas

The Alkiškių miškas lies beside Alkiškiai and is also known as the Alkiškių pušynas. The state forest covers about 100 hectares and is classified as a forest park. Its area and classification describe different aspects: the approximate size gives an indication of scale, while the forest-park category classifies the forest in another way. While the church is defined by its construction and consecration years, the forest is characterized by its location, name, area and classification. Local history and landscape thus stand side by side as distinct points of interest.

Coin hoard and its safekeeping

A hoard of about 370 silver coins from the 16th and 17th centuries was found in Alkiškiai. The approximate number indicates the scale of the find; the two centuries establish its time frame. Part of the hoard is kept at the Vilniaus istorijos ir etnografijos muziejus. This distinguishes the findspot from where part of the hoard is kept: the hoard comes from Alkiškiai, while the museum holds part of it. The coin hoard complements the church’s construction history with another way of exploring local history.

Water touring on the Dabikinė

Near Alkiškiai, there is a water-tour route along the right bank of the Dabikinė, heading towards Akmenė. Kayaks, canoes or similar paddle boats are recommended. This specifies the bank, direction and recommended type of boat. Before planning your trip, check the water-route conditions and whether it is suitable for your journey. If paddling is important to your stay, include this check in your planning.

Local transport and trip planning

Municipal bus route No. 74 Akmenė–Daubiškiai–Sablauskiai–Akmenė passes through Alkiškiai and has a stop there. As bus routes and timetables are subject to change, check the timetable before travelling. For planning your stay, local transport and the water route are two separate considerations: check the timetable for the bus and the conditions for the paddling route.

If you are looking for hotels for a trip to Alkiškiai, you can weigh up the destination according to your interests: the church and coin hoard offer cultural and historical points of interest, the forest offers a focus on landscape, and the Dabikinė has a water-tour route.
