If you would like to combine architecture and manor landscapes with exploring the countryside on your trip, Gelgaudiškis offers several concrete starting points: a manor and church, a 118-hectare park, a nature trail and a cycling route. The range extends from architectural details to a route with different surfaces.

Manor and church: two architectural histories

The Gelgaudiškis Manor, a notable 19th-century architectural ensemble, stands on the banks of the Nemunas. Ten buildings dating from the manor era have been preserved within the manor grounds. This means the ensemble and individual surviving buildings can be viewed side by side, offering two different scales at which to explore the historic estate.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is also defined by clear architectural features: the single-nave Neo-Gothic building has a tower and three turrets. It was built of stone between 1866 and 1868. Its style, floor plan and tower configuration give it a distinct architectural character alongside the manor complex; its construction period also places it within the history of the town.

Manor park and landscapes along the Nemunas

The manor park covers 118 hectares, slopes down towards the Nemunas and was laid out in the French style. Its size, design and relationship with the river shape different aspects of the grounds. Gelgaudiškis also lies within Panemuniai Regional Park. Here, the historic manor park meets the wider framework of the protected area.

The nature trail includes several specifically named points of interest. It passes the site known as Asesoriaus Kapas and includes the Žvaigždė clearing. Paths radiate from this clearing in eight compass directions. A viewpoint on the trail looks towards Panemunė Castle. The clearing draws attention to the distinctive layout of the paths, while the viewpoint focuses the view on another historic site.

Exploring on foot or by bike

The nature trail connects the points mentioned above along a walking route, while the cycling route offers a different perspective on the surrounding area. The Gelgaudiškis–Žemoji Panemunė cycling route is about 36 kilometres long and runs over gravel and asphalt. Its length and surfaces may change due to maintenance work, so it is worth checking the latest route information when planning your trip.

About 14 kilometres from Gelgaudiškis, the cycling route reaches Plokščiai. There you will find Vaiguva, known as the river street, and Šventauobė. This approximate distance along the route leads to two more named destinations and complements the sights around the manor and park. When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up whether you are mainly interested in the local cultural heritage or also in the cycling route and its destinations in Plokščiai.

Manor programme and planning your visit

A carillon with 36 bells is located in the manor park. It is used at events at the manor and during educational excursions; whether it plays at a particular event may vary. The manor programme also includes theatrical and educational tours, dance lessons, educational programmes for children, and dance and tasting excursions. Events featuring classical music are also held as part of the Beatričė Festival. The activities available on your travel dates may vary, so check the programme in advance.

To choose between the different highlights, it helps to consider what sets them apart: the church and manor ensemble represent architectural history, the park brings together design and riverside scenery, the nature trail features named points of interest, and the cycling route offers a longer journey over changing surfaces. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, use these interests as a starting point and check separately which event dates suit your plans.
