Pettigo is a good base for excursions to the counties of Donegal, Fermanagh, Leitrim, Sligo, Tyrone and Derry. In the village itself, buildings, the Termon Complex and nearby Lough Derg offer different insights into the area’s history and attractions.

Architectural History and Memorials in Pettigo

The Church of Ireland Church in Pettigo was designed in 1838 by architect William Farrell. Its original form and architectural character have been preserved, along with extensive surviving building features. A stained-glass window in the chancel was installed in 1968 to designs by Shrigley and Hunt of Lancaster. It commemorates the Barton family of nearby Waterfoot House in County Fermanagh.

The walled garden was laid out around 1800 and renovated around 1930 and in 2008. As an integral part of Pettigo’s built heritage, it offers a historical insight into the effort required to operate and maintain large houses in the 19th century. The site is in ruins and no longer in use. The Barton Family Mausoleum was built around 1870 and contains the remains of the Barton family. Pettigo is also associated with a First World War memorial plaque: a pink granite slab bears the names of local servicemen who died in the war.

Its recreational facilities include riverside trails, cycling paths, play areas and fitness rooms. The Complex also hosts musical, theatrical and sporting events, as well as conferences and banquets. Its range of offerings gives visitors several ways to make the most of a stay.
