Bailieborough: History and Nearby Trails
Accommodation in Bailieborough
Bailieborough offers two themes to help plan your trip: the history of the Bridewell and the old Church of Ireland, as well as trails and scenery in the surrounding area. If you are looking for a hotel in Bailieborough, you can distinguish visits to the town from other destinations in County Cavan. The local cultural sites stand on their own, as does the countryside beyond the town.
History around the Bridewell and Courthouse
Bailieborough Bridewell was built in 1833 and closed in 1900. The visitor experience explores the former justice system, life for the inmates and the role of the prison governor, known as “the Keeper”. He lived with his family above the cells. Beside the Bridewell is the historic Bailieborough Courthouse, built in 1817. The Courthouse complex includes a Plantation Museum as well as cultural and exhibition spaces; the museum is considered the first of its kind on the island of Ireland.
The Three Folk Museum is part of the Bridewell. It explores the heritage of the Gaels, Ulster-Scots and English settlers, whose histories are intertwined in this region. The interpretation may change over time. The Building Bridges Mural also reflects these communities: its colourful arches form a bridge and represent Ulster-Scots, Gaels and English people. As a more recent public art installation, the mural complements the historical themes with a visual depiction of these three communities.
The Bridewell visitor collection includes the 1611 Corrowdownan Manuscript. It documents a land grant made by King James I to John Browne of Scotland during the early Plantation of Ulster. The manuscript display may change.
Church history at the town’s highest point
The ruins of the old Church of Ireland stand at Bailieborough’s highest point. The present-day Church of Ireland replaced the earlier church in 1835. The old church’s graveyard is the resting place of many distinguished residents of the town, including ancestors of the writer Henry James. The church and graveyard thus offer different insights into the town’s architectural history and the people connected with Bailieborough.
Woodland trail and scenery near Bailieborough
About 1 km from Bailieborough, outside the town, is the Castle Lake Forest Trail. It runs around the lake and offers lake views throughout; an additional loop extends the route by 3 km. Along the way, the trail passes the remains of Bailieborough Castle and a memorial to those who died at Rebel Hill in 1798. The longer Castle Lake Loop option also passes the graves of the Marist Brothers who lived in Bailieborough Castle.
Nearby is also Loughanleagh, a ridge between Bailieborough and Kingscourt on the R165 in the east of County Cavan. It is about 5 km long and up to 1 km wide, reaching 344 m above sea level. In suitable weather, it offers panoramic views of up to fourteen surrounding counties of Ireland. The ridge and the lakeside trail offer different kinds of scenery: views across the surrounding area here, and lake views along a woodland trail there.
