Newcastle West can be explored from different angles when planning your trip: Desmond Banqueting Hall offers insights into medieval architectural history, while the park and paths bring the River Arra and the surrounding landscape into focus. The Limerick Greenway also passes through Newcastle West. You can weigh up whether you are more interested in historic architecture, a walking route along the river, or a 40-kilometre walking and cycling route.

Desmond Banqueting Hall: Building History and Architecture

Construction of Desmond Banqueting Hall in Newcastle West began in the 13th century. The hall, vaulted undercroft and adjoining tower were built in the 15th century; the hall and undercroft were constructed on the remains of a similarly large 13th-century building. Its building history therefore encompasses an early start and later-constructed features.

The Earls of Desmond used the hall for banquets and entertainment. Its restored medieval features include an oak minstrel's gallery and a limestone fireplace with a hood. A guided tour lets you explore its historic use and architectural details together. Tours led by OPW guides are free for all visitors; seasonal opening arrangements may vary. Check in advance whether a tour is available at your preferred time.

The tower of Desmond Castle offers another perspective on the area: after climbing it, you can enjoy panoramic views of Newcastle West and the valley in which the town lies.

Castle Demesne Park and the Path along the River Arra

Castle Demesne Park is a mature parkland area of more than 100 acres in a secluded setting. It is within walking distance of Newcastle West town centre. The park has a range of recreational, play and sports facilities for everyone. This gives it a different focus from the historic structures of Desmond Banqueting Hall.

The Newcastle West Slí na Sláinte walking route follows the banks of the River Arra and leads to the pedestrian entrance to Castle Demesne. The riverbank and park entrance are therefore the key points for finding your way along this route. This distinguishes the local walking route from the Greenway, which connects places across West Limerick.

The Limerick Greenway from Newcastle West

The Limerick Greenway is a 40-kilometre, traffic-free route for walking and cycling. It connects places in West Limerick, including Newcastle West. While the Slí na Sláinte follows the River Arra to Castle Demesne, the Greenway offers a regional route for walking and cycling.

In Newcastle West, the Greenway can be accessed via the entrance on Station Road, near Gaelscoil Ă“ DĂłghair, or via the Recycling Centre on the R521, or from the Greenway car park at Newcastle West Business Park. At the Newcastle West trailhead, the Greenway is fully accessible from the car park and can be used independently by people with disabilities. Check access and route information before travelling; parking arrangements may change.
