Goleen brings together village history and architecture, a harbour, a walking trail and activities from Goleen Harbour Adventures. For a clearer picture, it is worth distinguishing between these themes: the Roman Catholic church gives the architectural heritage a tangible form, while the Fastnet Trails – Goleen Harbour Long Loop passes through wildflowers, meadows and a newly planted woodland, with views of the pier, harbour and Fastnet Rock. Goleen Harbour Adventures’ offerings add play, a treasure hunt and animal encounters to these themes of place and landscape.

Village History and Church

The village developed in the 19th century at a crossroads where a cattle fair was held. The road through Goleen is very wide; the houses were originally built as shops. The village’s history can therefore be traced both in the shape of the street and in the former use of the houses.

The Roman Catholic church stands in a prominent position on the edge of the village and is an important architectural feature as well as a key part of the social fabric for many years. It was built in 1854 and has a cruciform plan. The four-bay nave is complemented by a single-bay chancel and single-bay transepts. A three-storey entrance bell tower stands at the west end; a sacristy was added later to the east. The bays denote sections of the building: there are four in the nave and one each in the chancel and transepts. This makes it possible to understand the cruciform layout through its individual parts.

Harbour, Walking Trail and Nature

The village has a hidden harbour; the place name “Goilin” is associated with “little inlet.” At the entrance to the harbour is a deep-water quay that accommodates fishing boats and yachts. The harbour thus brings together both the reference to a little inlet and a quay for different types of boats.

The Fastnet Trails – Goleen Harbour Long Loop passes the pier and winds through wildflowers, meadows and a newly planted woodland. It offers views of Goleen Pier and the harbour, as well as Fastnet Rock. This brings stretches of landscape together with named viewpoints. At low tide, the harbour provides food for wildlife such as foxes and pheasants.
