Accommodation in Courtmacsherry
If you are considering Courtmacsherry as a destination for your stay, you can focus on three local highlights: maritime history, walking and nature watching, and activities on the water.
Maritime history and memorials
Courtmacsherry Harbour Lifeboat Station was founded in 1825 and was one of the first lifeboat stations in Ireland. The two churches also reflect distinct historical influences: Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Courtmacsherry was built in 1885.
In the Church of St John the Evangelist, an inscription in the porch and a donated stained-glass window commemorate the Ladies Boyle, the last members of the family to live in Courtmacsherry. Alongside the area's maritime history, these are tangible reminders of the past, though these historical details do not indicate whether the interiors can be visited today.
Walks, coastal scenery and birdwatching
The Bay Walk from Courtmacsherry to Timoleague is three miles long, follows flat paths and is suitable for all ages. The Seven Heads Walk leads from the village of Timoleague through Courtmacsherry, along rugged cliffs and the coast towards Dunworley Bay. The routes therefore differ both in their stated length and terrain, and in the direction of the coast they follow.
Courtmacsherry Estuary is designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). On walks through Courtmacsherry, birdwatchers may see redshanks, greenshanks, godwits, oystercatchers and, occasionally, herons and swans. Great northern divers can be found in the channel beyond the car park, past the woods, from November to May.
Activities on the water
Courtmacsherry's tidal harbour offers safe, sheltered areas for sailing and leisure activities. Courtmacsherry Harbour Boat Club welcomes locals, visitors and weekend guests as members. People without their own boat can also become members and take part in on-water activities aboard members' boats.
Atlantic Whale & Wildlife Tours offers guided whale-watching trips departing from Courtmacsherry Pier. Check current tour dates before making specific plans. Courtmacsherry Sea Angling Centre offers charter services on fishing boats. Options include offshore fishing on reefs and wrecks, and fishing for sharks, common skates and bluefin tuna; there is also inshore and estuary fishing. Fish species and conditions vary seasonally.
Courtmacsherry Sea Angling Centre operates two purpose-built fishing boats as well as a self-drive fleet. If a particular boat option is important to your plans, check current availability in advance.
A landmark at the village entrance
At the entrance to Courtmacsherry, there is a well-maintained playground overlooking the water. As its condition may change, briefly check the current situation before visiting.
