Kilrush lies at the mouth of the River Shannon and along the Wild Atlantic Way. If you are looking for a hotel in Kilrush, it helps to consider which side of the town you want your trip to focus on: the Heritage Town and historic sites, woodland paths, or activities at the marina. This lets you choose where to stay according to your interests in cultural history, nature and the water.

Gardens and historic landmarks

Kilrush is one of 15 officially recognised Heritage Towns in Ireland. Vandeleur Walled Garden brings together several aspects of the town’s history: in the early 19th century, it was the private garden of Kilrush House, the ancestral home of the Vandeleur family. The garden is set amid 170 hectares of native woodland in Kilrush Wood. The visitor centre at Vandeleur Walled Garden houses a permanent exhibition featuring the Vandeleur-Phelps Fireplace Installation and the Frank O’Connor Butterfly Collection. It is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm; visiting hours may change. Turret Lodge is a prominent landmark in Kilrush Town and controls access between the town and the demesne of the Vandeleur estate.

Monastic heritage nearby

Scattery Island is near Kilrush. Its ancient monastic heritage includes a round tower, a cathedral and several medieval churches. The island is a National Monument in state care and is the responsibility of the Office of Public Works. Scattery Island Tours offers a 20-minute crossing through the lock gates from Kilrush Marina. Crossings are seasonal and tide-dependent; check sailing times for your visit.

Water and nature on the Shannon Estuary

Kilrush’s location on the Shannon Estuary gives water-based activities a strong connection to the area. Dolphin-watching trips depart from Kilrush Marina, pass through the lock gates and head out into the estuary. They are seasonal and weather-dependent; take this into account when planning. Dolphin Discovery works with the Shannon Dolphin Project and operates its trips in a dolphin-friendly way. Confirm this conservation practice before booking.

The marina is a Blue Flag Marina, providing access to the Shannon Estuary and the Shannon inland waterway system. Check Blue Flag status and access for the current season. The West Coast Aqua Park is also located at the marina, with floating obstacle courses on the water for families. It operates seasonally; age requirements may change, so it is advisable to check before visiting. Cappagh Pier in Kilrush is a designated Blue Flag beach. Check its designation and water conditions before swimming.

Golf and trails

Kilrush Golf Club has an 18-hole course. Nearby, Kilrush Forest has two circular trails, each 3 km long, as well as a multi-use trail just over 1 km long. The two circular trails are the same length; the multi-use trail is shorter. You can use these distances to plan how much time to spend outdoors.
