Kilkee lies on the Loop Head Peninsula along the Wild Atlantic Way. The Kilkee Cliffs are on the Cliff Coast section of this route. The town brings together coastal features, waterside activities and a Victorian streetscape. These themes offer different focuses for planning your trip: the beach and reef, walks along the cliffs, watersports and local history.

Beach, Reef and Pollock Holes

Kilkee has a 1.5 km international Blue Flag beach. A reef protects the beach from the full force of the Atlantic. The Pollock Holes are natural swimming pools surrounded by a reef with constantly changing waves. Kilkee therefore brings together different coastal features: at the beach, the reef’s protective effect is central; at the Pollock Holes, it is the natural shape of the pools and the lively water around them. This distinction gives you a clear picture of two different aspects of the coast.

Compare Cliff Walks by Distance and Walking Time

Several described routes of different lengths and walking times run along the Kilkee Cliffs. The Short Cliff Walk is 1.8 km long and takes 30 minutes. The Short Circular Walk covers 4 km and takes 50 minutes. The Long Circular Walk is 7.3 km and takes 1.5 hours; at 11.7 km and 2.5 hours, the Long Cliff Walk is the longest of the four routes. In terms of length and stated walking time, the two Circular Walks fall between the shorter and longer options. You can compare the routes by their distances and estimated times without reducing them to a single type of walk. Conditions on the routes can change; check them before setting out.

Diving and Waterside Activities

Oceanlife is an SSI dive centre at the East Pier in Kilkee. The Kilkee Subaqua Club offers dives for members and visiting divers during the season. The options therefore include different types of diving: a dive centre at a specifically named pier and seasonal trips run by a club. If you plan a dive, take the season into account when considering the club. Nevsail Watersports has offered lessons and tours in kayaking, canoeing, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, windsurfing, coasteering, rock climbing and archery in Kilkee for over 16 years. Its range spans paddle and watersports through to climbing and archery. Martin Haugh runs several guided tours along the Kilkee Cliffs and at other locations on the Loop Head Peninsula. As the availability of these tours can change, check before making plans.

Victorian Character and Racquets Tradition

Kilkee has preserved its charming 19th-century Victorian character. One specific local sporting tradition is racquets: the game has been played against the white walls in the West End for over a century. This tradition is therefore tied to a named location in the town. Together with the town’s historic character, it shows another side of Kilkee beyond the cliff walks and waterside activities.

Golf with Views of the Atlantic

Kilkee has an 18-hole golf course with views of the Atlantic from the cliffs. Golf adds to the range of sporting activities that make Kilkee distinctive. When planning a trip around your personal interests, you can consider the cliff walks, waterside activities, racquets tradition and golf course as different aspects of the destination.
