County Wexford combines coastal scenery with historic sites, museums and waymarked trails. At the Irish National Heritage Park, Hook Lighthouse and Ferns, very different experiences take centre stage. When choosing where to stay, you can first decide what matters most to you: lighthouse history, dunes and nature, historic places or a particular route. This lets you tailor your search to the themes you want to shape your trip.

Coast, Dunes and Lighthouse History

Hook Lighthouse stands at the tip of the Hook Peninsula in County Wexford. Guided tours there explore 800 years of lighthouse history. Those interested in maritime history can get a close look at how the lighthouse developed—not just learn about it as the subject of an exhibition. Check the current booking conditions for the tour before your visit.

At Curracloe Beach, a nature trail winds through the dunes and introduces visitors to the local flora and fauna. The trail combines time on the coast with an opportunity to learn about the area’s natural environment. Rather than simply taking in the dunes, you can learn more along the way about the plants and animals found there.

Historic Places and Museums

The Irish National Heritage Park is a 35-acre open-air museum with 16 reconstructed sites. Activities, reconstructions, workshops and courses are among the offerings for visitors of all ages. The combination of the grounds, reconstructed sites and different formats makes the park a destination in its own right during a stay in County Wexford.

Tintern Cistercian Abbey was founded around 1200 by William, Earl Marshal. It is located in a special nature reserve and surrounded by woodland with walking trails. Here, abbey history meets a wooded setting with paths to explore. Ferns offers a different historical perspective: the Ferns Tapestry is 15 metres long and consists of 25 panels. Ferns Castle was built around 1200 by William, Earl Marshall.

In New Ross, the Dunbrody Famine Ship tells a different story. It is based on an authentic reproduction of an emigrant ship from the 1840s. The Dunbrody experience includes a guided tour, costumed interpreters and themed exhibitions. The ship, the re-enactment and the exhibition are all part of the visitor experience described here.

The Irish Agricultural Museum at Johnstown Castle displays agricultural machinery, vehicles and artefacts, some up to 100 years old. A tour of Johnstown Castle also includes an 86-metre-long underground servants’ passage. If you plan to take the tour, check the current tour arrangements in advance.

Trails of Different Lengths

Wexford Walking Trails is a network of waymarked routes, with more than 80 trails at 39 locations throughout the county. The overview offers a wide selection, while individual trails allow for more detailed planning. The trail selection may change, so check which routes are currently listed in advance.

The Ferns Village Heritage Trail is just under 2.5 kilometres long. The Southeast Greenway from New Ross to Glenmore is 6 kilometres long. These distances make it easy to compare the routes without needing to estimate a specific walking time. The first trail is the shorter of the two; the Greenway links the two named places over the stated distance.

A Food and Farm Experience in County Wexford

The private food-and-farm tour Fruit, Feathers and Flour includes strawberry picking and a visit to an old watermill, with stone-ground flour at its heart. The itinerary and availability may change, so it is worth checking before making plans. County Wexford is considered a cornerstone of Ireland's Ancient East. From the coast and historic places to trails and this tour, you can shape your stay around the experiences that interest you most.
